TheIrvine family added acres (km²) of land south of their original holdings until they acquired over 1 million acres of land in all three counties in 1928. In 1905, the City of Los Angeles annexed portions of Orange County as part of its effort to build an inner city west of downtownLos Angeles. On May 10, 1912, Mayor Arthur Ashe dedicated a parkland area bounded on the north by Exposition Boulevard and bounded on the south by Vine Street known as "Irvine Park". This parkland occupied what is now streets northeast of Iverson Avenue (now Pershing Road), southeast from Van Ness Avenue (now Jerome Avenue), northwest from Sepulveda Boulevard (now Fletcher Drive), southwest from Euclid Avenue (now Ventura Boulevard), east from Robertson Boulevard (now Elmira Street) and west from Main Street (now Western Ave). In 1931 nearby Glendale became part of Los Angeles when it was annexed into Orange County
