El Monte is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 113,524 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County and the eighth most populous city in California. El Monte was founded by Mexicans who arrived during the Mexican–American War as part of a force under General Fred Kearny to drive out American settlers from east of the San Gabriel Mountains. The City of El Monte was incorporated on November 3, 1912, and became one of two cities withinLos Angeles County after being organized from sections of Ventura County. The history of El Monte goes back to 1847 when José Castro established an adobe rancho (later Rancho San Miguel) about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of present-day downtown El Monte on what is now named Castro Road. In 1868, Antonio Vallejo granted land southeast of downtown to Francisco Palomo for $5 per acre (2 ha). By 1870, Palomo had built aadobe house at 4127 E Street which served as town hall until 1889 when it burned down. In 1892; Manuel González donated land northward from Castro Road for a public school system which would become known as Valley High School; but some property owners refused to contribute money so González built a new school on his own properties near Petaluma Boulevard and East Campus Avenue in 1912. Valley High School became one of three high schools operating in Los Angeles County when it opened its doors in 1914 with over 2,000 students enrolled from throughout southern LA county including portions bordering Kern Valley and Ventura County A year later another school building followed on Vinegar Hill Road northeast cornering University Drive just south of Koreatown before closing again due to lack Of funding soon after that due to typewriters becoming available for use instead thereof During World War II there were many factories located close by like Lockheed Aircraft Factory & Ford Motor Company all producing munitions needed by our war effort such as planes & tanks

El Monte, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is bordered by Fresno County to the east and north, Kern County to the west, and San Joaquin County to the south. The population was 68,827 as of 2010. The first human beings to live in what is now El Monte were Native Americans who roamed the area for hunting and gathering. The first European explorers to visit this area were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party in 1769. The Spanish took over this region from the Puebloans during their time of rule in California. In 1846, Mexican nationals arrived here on horseback looking for land grants that they could sell back to Mexico. A group of American cowboys led by James Shields discovered gold nuggets at Yreka on December 12th, 1848 while seeking passage on a ship back to New York City. This triggered an intense rush for land in this area as people believed that gold would be found everywhere it was looked. After finding a few ounces of gold at Yreka, Shields headed northeast where he prospected until 1850 when he sold his claims at $2 an ounce ($56 million today). In 1861-1862, General Ulysses S. Grant fought a series of battles against Confederate forces near here known as Battle of Grantsville which resulted in three Union generals being killed including General Robert E Lee who later became president of Virginia Beach (VA) after losing his military career due to his participation in this battle.
