El Monte is a city in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 108,618 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now El Monte were the Tongva Native Americans who populated this area for thousands of years before European exploration began in 1821. In 1846, Mexican land grantee Alta Californiana sold sections of Rancho Cucamonga and Rancho San Simeon to James Hahn for $5,000. In 1906, gold was discovered near El Monte and soon a bonanza was being had in mining quartz from Hillcrest Canyon and other areas around the city. Mining operations continued until 1915 when production came to an end because of over-zealous management by early investors seeking quick riches rather than long-term investment or development. A new generation of entrepreneurs took control after World War II and during the postwar boom period saw El Monte become one of Southern California’s most rapidly growing cities with mass transit (the first light rail system) and miles of agricultural land available for housing developments. Growth slowed during the 1970s recession as manufacturing left town for cheaper places to be developed; however, it picked up again during recent decades as El Monte has become an increasingly cosmopolitan center with a high concentration of middle-class families who value its quality schools and parks as well as its easy access to major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, Anaheim Hills, Pasadena and Torrance

El Monte is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The community was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1868 as a mission station called Mesa Verde. It served as a center for religious instruction and social services for Mormons who had to leave their homes in Utah during the Gold Rush. El Monte also became known as "The Birthplace of American Football." The first team to play football there was the Assemblies of God's United Brethren of America club, which played its first game on November 1, 1876 against rival Bishop Talbot's Americans. The city's history dates back even further than that; it has been mentioned in various documents dating back to 1769 when Spanish traders discovered what they thought was an uninhabited monastic settlement near present-day Garland and began trading with the native Mono people. The Pico de la Hoya Mountains were seen from El Monte and early Spaniards built temporary(?) settlements there before continuing their journey upriver towards Sacramento City. On July 25, 1769, Felipe Antonio Salinas y La Hoz discovered (or claimed to have discovered) a small valley between Pico de la Hoya and Sierra Nevadas named Santa Ana Valley ("Valley of Angels"). He named it after his patron saint—Angels—and granted permission to the local bishop, Francisco Ximénez de Anza, to establish a small mission church thereon on October 14th of that year. A few weeks later he published an Orderly Journal entry announcing "…the discovery of this valuable valley by us richly endowed with all sorts of minerals", adding "we baptize these new converts into our faith…." By 1771 most of what is now Inyo County had been organized into rancherias or land grants given out by Pedro Fages y Valdez to prominent Mexican settlers such as José Joaquín Mora and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Eleven years later Juan Bautista Gordillo took possession of some 500 acres (2 km²) east-southeast of present-day El Monte along Witham Creek about two miles south-southwest OF Mount Shasta within present day Cathedral Peak Wilderness Preserve open only to members thereof since 1978 A map dated February 9th, 1847 shows portions including present day El Monte within Rancho San Felipe jurisdiction

The first settlement in what is now El Monte date back to 1847 when men from nearby Pasadena came to build a post office on the site of what is now Spring Grove Cemetery. In 1850, landowner Julius Rosenwald donated 8 miles (12 km) of road leading out of Pasadena to the new town and it became known as El Monte. The city's growth was slow due to its location very close to Southern California's major cities and military bases, but it became an important center for citrus production during World War II. After the war, El Monte experienced rapid growth thanks to new industries such as auto manufacturing and real estate development. Today, El Monte remains one of Southern California's most diverse cities with a growing Hispanic population and numerous cultural attractions including art galleries, theaters, restaurants and nightlife venues
