The history of El Monte, California dates back to the early 1800s. The area that is now El Monte was part of Spanish California and was first settled by Native Americans. In 1853, the United States acquired control of California and in 1864, the Mexican government granted land to American citizens in what is now El Monte. The town started as a small community called Alameda and slowly grew over the next few decades. began business ventures such as grocery stores, lumberyards, and other businesses. In 1916, the city was incorporated and rapidly expanded due to its location on Interstate 5 and its wide availability of transportation resources. In recent years, El Monte has seen some major changes. In 2006, it became one of only two communities in San Bernardino County (the other being Riverside) to adopt Measure Y which legalized handgun ownership for all residents without a permit or registration. El Monte, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Population was 213,883 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Bernardino County and the third-largest city in Los Angeles County after L.A. and Pasadena. The City of El Monte was incorporated on September 2, 1912 and named for Major General John Sutter who founded the settlement in 1847 on land that he had purchased from Mission Santa Anita. The first post office opened in El Monte on December 3, 1912. The economy of El Monte is primarily based on agriculture with a small manufacturing sector; however, there are some major businesses including Boeing and MillerCoors which have their headquarters here as well as other smaller companies such as Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Adobe Systems Incorporated (formerly Creative Software). There are also several high schools such as Holy Cross Catholic High School, La Jolla High School and Covina Senior High School which serve the local community. The population of El Monte has grown rapidly over the past few decades due to an influx of immigrants Irish American (O'Malley), Italian American (Lorenzo) and Mexican Americans (Alvarado) who have brought their culture with them while they continue to work in various fields including construction, education, health care and retail sales respectively. Today's city is home to many different cultures together forming one large melting pot which reflects its name: el monte - "the mountain."

El Monte was founded in 1881 by George W. El Monte and his brother-in-law, Hiram B. Howe, a rancher and politician. The town grew quickly due to its location on the San Gabriel River, which led to its nickname of "The City of Angels." In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the El Monte Army Air Field at nearby Pico Boulevard after it had been designated as one of the first airfields in the United States following World War I. Today, El Monte is an incorporated city with a population of over 100,000 people that includes portions of both Riverside and Moreno Valley Counties. One of the most significant moments in El Monte's history came when it became part of California during Proposition 14 in November 1912. This amendment granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or gender. Prior to this amendment, only property owners who could afford a poll tax were able to participate in democracy. In 1916, Mayor Harry Bridges presented a petition for incorporation to the board of supervisors requesting that the town be annexed into Riverside County because he felt that Riverside was too small for such an expanding town and he believed that annexation would financially help improveroadsandhousingfacilities within El Monte's boundaries In 1930, Mayor Harry Bridges unveiled what is now known asElsomobile Park which served as home to America's first open-air movie theater located outside Los Angeles on Pico Boulevard opposite Manhattan Beach Pier
The El Monte area was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 1800s. The town began as a small community on the east side of San Bernardino County, but quickly grew into a major settlement with its own government and economy. The town was renamed after General John Fonda during World War II, in honor of the general's role in helping to defeat Japanese forces in that war. In 1951, El Monte became an incorporated city and continues to serve as its own local government today.
