El Monte is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 163,057 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Gabriel Mountains and borders Arcadia to the northwest and Sylmar to the east. The city was founded by Mexicans in 1881 as part of what would become Southern California. The name "El Monte" means "Hill of Mono", and it was chosen because there were no hills in that area. There are several theories about why this might have been so: Some say that it reminded settlers of Mount Montero, also in Los Angeles County; others believe that it resembled the Spanish word for "mountain," montera (a hill). The name stuck, and today El Monte is one of Southern California's most influential cities due to its proximity to Hollywood, its rich cultural heritage, and its diverse demographics. In 1881, Mexican immigrants who had families here began moving into what would become El Monte from all over southern California. Many wererought over on horseback or wagon trains during the early years of settlement because transportation was difficult and expensive back then. By 1890 when figures from the US Census were available, there were more than 7500 people living in El Monte alone! A few years later residents voted to change their name from "Montero" to "El Monte". This was due largely to political reasons: In Mexico City at that time many people lobbied for a change so they could be seen as Americanized instead of Mexicanized (this distinction still exists today). The original name has been used continuously ever since - even though some sources claim there may have been a brief attempt at changing it back around 1898 after a series of wildfires destroyed much of downtown El Monte). Today El Monte offers an interesting mixof cultures with both Anglo-Saxon families who grew up hereabouts during WWII mixed with Latinos/os from all over South America who've made their homes here since before 1959 – including sizable Argentinean communities dating back centuries! In 1846, the Mexican-American War began when American forces invaded Mexico. The war lasted for years and ended in 1848. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in February 1848, ending the war. It granted land to Mexicans and Native Americans, as well as $15 million in gold and silver coins to be divided among both sides. El Monte was founded in 1847 by Antonio Palomares and his family. It became a part of California on January 14, 1850.
