The first Europeans to visit El Monte were Spanish explorers in 1769-1770. They named the place San Miguel de Alcalá after Saint Michael, leader of the Archangel Gabriel expedition who had recently made landfall in southern California. The United States acquired Mexico's share of Alta California from Spain through Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 2, 1848 - this included most of what is now Mexican-American land east of the Colorado River – including present-day El Monte County. On January 26, 1850 Samuel Proctor filed for incorporation as a city with 3 acres (1 km²) free land fronting upon Prospect Avenue and 8 acres (3 ha) back lot (now part of City Park). The city was granted its charter on March 20, 1850 by Gov. Pio Pico under which it became one hundred percent Americanized and functioned as an open air mission station run by Americans until 1852 when Mexican forces dismantled it following Ygnacio Vasquez's successful attack against American settlers near Monterey Hills; this event led to an arms race between U.S.-Mexican forces exacerbated by Baron Bracamontes' assurances that he could control much Of eastern Californias interior not yet claimed by either country. In 1862 Union General John Custer destroyed two cavalry camps nearpresent day Monterey Hills during his march across northern Mexico into Chile where he encountered Confederate forces under Jeffery Lickliter; both General Custer and Lieutenant Colonel James Reynolds lost their lives trying to return home with news of the victory while Lickliter escaped unpunished. As a result, Ulysses S Grant ordered his army commanders to respect Mexican sovereignty over lands acquisitions since they were considered part of Mexicos internal affairs rather than public domain like other areas conquered during the war such as Arizona or New Mexico

El Monte, California is a city in the San Bernardino County of Northern California, United States. The population was 381,713 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County and is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. El Monte was founded in 1887 by brothers George and John El Monte as a small town on Rancho San Pedro (now called Manor Park). The name derives from Spanish words meaning "mountain" or "place of refuge." The first post office was established in 1887, and the first store opened in 1888. The community rapidly grew and soon had a school, several churches, an hotel, gas station and railroad yards. By 1912 it had reached its peak with a population of 1,500 people. However, during World War I efforts to get munitions production going led to mass layoffs for local workers; as a result, many businesses closed down or changed their names to avoid detection by military authorities. In 1925 El Monte shared in what became known as the Great American Eclipse Disaster when two thousand citizens were evacuated from their homes due to fears of an eclipse that would cause widespread destruction across Southern California. In 1941 it merged with neighbouring Claremont into one municipality under then-Mayor Willis Fenton's leadership which saw continued growth until 1990 when it lost its status as an independent city after Proposition 227 was passed which increased taxes within city limits by 25%. Today much original infrastructure has been repurposed into new neighborhoods such as Eastridge Commons nearDel Mar High School and North Hollywood Hills which straddles old Airport Boulevard which once served as Highland Avenue; this area has become one of most popular areas for residents because of its close proximity to both El Monte City Hall (just east offIvar Doig Drive) and Hollywood Studios (just south off Wilshire Boulevard).
