El Monte is a town located in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is adjacent to the city of Los Angeles on two sides and to Orange County on the other. The townsite of El Monte was first patented by Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1821. The site now includes both El Monte and Pico Rivera neighborhoods on its east side. On January 1, 1870, parts of what are now Pomona and Claremont communities were annexed into El Monte as well. Today's total population is about 50% Latino. The name "El Monte" comes from Spanish "el Monterey", meaning "the high mountain." In 1872 José Joaquin Moraga used it for his Mexican Rancho de las Palmas y la Mesa del Monterey (later known as Moraga Rancho), which ran along present-day US Route 91 between Pomona and Claremont. Part of this rancho was purchased by John Caffey in 1875 after being driven out of Redondo Beach by Navy lieutenant James Wickersham Sr.. Caffey named his new community after himself, el monte (Spanish for "mountain"). On May 4, 1907, during World War I Japanese American internment at Fort Bliss near Phoenixville in San Antonio County, Texas, a group of military men under the command of Major General Isamu Yamamoto entered el monte through an opening in the hills northeast of town while carrying munitions supplies to help support Allied troops fighting against Germany at Verdun. They were stopped by local civilians who reported them to authorities; no one was arrested or prosecuted for their actions. The men left without any fireworks or weapons but with food supplies that they stockpiled before leaving; they then returned later that night with artillery fire support to support Allied forces fighting against German forces encamped nearby at Belleau Wood). Although some people erroneously believe that these events resulted in Japan annexing el monte into its territory upon their return home, there is no evidence whatsoever confirming this claim: instead all residents remaining within town limits continued to enjoy their own autonomy until 1951 when Proposition 8 repealed most area municipal powers granted prior to that date including incorporation into larger metropolitan areas like LA/LAX etc.–in effect returning much property already acquired back to private hands following World War II displacement rates among Japanese Americans estimated at over 80%. In 1957 a smallpox outbreak occurred in el montes school system; as a result all schools closed for three days while medical personnel vaccinated all students and staff member with vaccine available free from health department facility (now Starr School District Library) until further notice allowing students time off work/school during outbreak period; finally reopened on Wednesday morning after full complement of measles-containing vaccine had been administered throughout school system including teacher’s assistant roles). Following closure all children returning home from school were met outside house by father or mother accompanied by adult helper(s) until picked up by bus from school premises where driver parked lot next door awaiting transport back home
