El Monte, California is known as the "City of Roses" for its many red roses that adorn city walls and other public places. The rose trade began in El Monte in the 1870s and continued until the early 21st century. The first firearms to be manufactured in El Monte were shotguns and rifles. Rifle manufacturers included Captain John Davenport, who operate a rifle factory in downtown El Monte from 1881-1892. In 1902, Captain Davenport's son, Colonel George Davenport organized a Rose Society to propagate the use of roses for decorative purposes throughout Southern California. These organizations promoted responsible firearm ownership and protection through education and fundraising activities. On February 17, 1903, Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest was shot at point blank range by Sheriff Harry Wulfenberg while on patrol near San Pedro Avenue and Eastern Boulevard in downtown El Monte. Lieutenant Colonel Forrest was rushed to University Hospital where he died a few hours later due to his injuries; this event is considered one of the most tragic shootings in Los Angeles County history.

The El Monte Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The club held its first meeting at the old Masonic Temple on Alameda Street. In 1912, the club moved to its current location on Second Avenue in El Monte. The El Monte Pistol Club is one of the oldest pistol clubs in California and it has been active since 1892.
El Monte, California is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It is the most populous city in Los Angeles County and the third-largest municipality by population within Los Angeles County after Los Angeles and Pasadena. As of 2015, El Monte had a population of 153,883. The city was founded on July 20, 1871 by Alvarado Battery Co. marketers as a small trading post on Mount Pleasant Rancho de las Palmas de los Cahuillas y la Villa del Rey (present day boundaries of City of El Monte). It became an incorporated town on February 16, 1892. The original name for El Monte was Sierra Hacienda de las Palomas y el Rey (The Mountain Home Ranch and palace), but it was changed to its current name because it was more likely to be remembered locally than as Don Pedro's Rancho Las Palomas or La Villa Real. On October 22nd 1913 at 12:01pm local time an earthquake struck magnitude 6.9 off the coast of Southern California killing over 200 people with significant damage throughout Southern California including parts of Orange County, Riverside County and Ventura County; this quake also made Tomales Island off Marineland uninhabitable for many years afterwards On December 5th 1916 during World War I US forces landed at Santa Catalina Island just north of present day downtown El Monte; this island served as an airfield for Allied bombers during World War II In 1951 when Compton Air Force Base opened in nearby Lynwood it displaced almost 10K residents from what is now eastside Downtown El Monte In 1978 when the last runways were closed at Compton AFB the large number relocated to eastside Downtown El Montempo which became known as "The Bronx" Today there are still remnants of military installations such as Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base where live fire exercises take place every other weekend

El Monte is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded in 1887 by Josefina and Manuel Orozco as the home of Joséfina's husband, Francisco El Monte. The community grew rapidly after the completion of the Santa Fe Railway's "El Monte Cutoff" from San Bernardino to Los Angeles in 1892. By 1910, there were more than 1,000 residents in El Monte. In 1923, Mayor Frank A. Munoz proposed that the name be changed to honor General George Custer for his service during World War I. However, much debate followed before the proposal was accepted and the name reverted back to El Monte on January 1, 1924. The population of El Monte peaked at 2,500 in 1950 but has since declined due to various factors including population loss from nearby cities such as Pasadena and Industry; high school dropsout rates; and changing job demands within the county. Today, only a few hundred people live in El Monte proper while most of its buildings are still used for storage or other purposes. The first post office operated at what is now known as 7th Street and Pico Boulevard (then called Rancho Adobe Road) on December 14, 1886. The present post office was established at 12th Avenue and Pico Boulevard on May 8, 1907. On November 15, 1912 an addition to Storey-Goudreau Chapel (now part of Old Main University) was dedicated with enlarged services which included mail service between local businesses and downtownLos Angeles The 1915-1918 San Diego earthquake injured 21 people including five children who had been playing outside when temblors struck near their house on North Broadway Drive about 5 p.m., October 17th 1915 Afterward citizens erected a fence around their property to prevent further damage In 1920s some homes were platted with streets named after early settlers like Hiram Lodge (now known as Chavez Ravine), Jameson Parker (now known as Exposition Park), John McLaren (now known as Monterey Park), etcetera
