They named their new development "City of Industry", although they never built a single house or business within it: they instead developed large agriculture estates with windmills that powered their mills and water systems. At first City of Industry enjoyed high levels of prosperity thanks to its excellent transportation links and its close proximity to agricultural markets; however, around 1900 industry declined as new factories were built near downtown Los Angeles but still benefiting from access to nearby resources like water power and Mill Valleywinds.
