It is located in the southern portion of San Diego County on the border of Orange County. The first people to live in what is now El Monte were Native American traders who traveled through this area during summertime for trade with other tribes. In 1820, José María Vallejo founded Vallejo Rancho Los Palos Verdes on part of Rancho Santa Anita which he acquired from Antonio López de la Torre. By 1835, all of Orange County had been organized as a county, and El Monte was incorporated as a town in 1861 by John D. Rockefeller Sr., one of America's largest investors and entrepreneurs. Rockefeller soon became interested in developing his new town into an agricultural center due to its location adjacent to two major railroads: The Southern Pacific Railway (SP) and the Central Pacific Railroad (CPR). He purchased more than 1,000 acres (400 hectares) east of downtownElsmona for $5 per acre ($100 million at current prices), making him one of the largest landowners in central San Diego County. Rockefeller's initial plans called for a large shopping center and industrial park that would have included factories such as Ford Motors, Radio Corporation International (RCI), Chase-Litton Paper Mill Company and others; but these plans never came to fruition because he died before they could be completed. El Monte, California is a city in the San Gabriel Valley and part of Los Angeles County. It was founded on December 6, 1885 by Mexican Americans who had come to work in the Rancho El Monte land grant that was given to them by Governor José Figueroa de la Hoz. The city was named for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, commander of Mexico's army at the Battle of Buena Vista and subsequent retreat from Mexico City. The Antelope Canyon National Monument is located in El Monte. In 1886, representatives from Los Angeles County met with Mexican American leaders at what is now called the "Council on Public Affairs" to discuss problems facing Mexican Americans living in Southern California. One result of this meeting was the creation of a committee to study conditions south of Pasadena. This committee recommended that El Monte be established as a separate municipality so that it could have its own police force and other public services unavailable to residents of Pasadena. On July 15, 1887, voters approved an act creating El Monte with a population of 507 people. In 1914, when Southern California became states independent from Mexico under President Woodrow Wilson's New Deal program, new laws were passed governing how citizens were treated within their respective jurisdictions. One such law mandated that all municipalities must adopt a form of government known as a city charter; El Monte did not do so until 1951. That same year saw the opening of downtown El Monte shopping district which remains one of town's main attractions today despite occasional controversies over development near parkland/. Although its boundaries changed several times during its history (from rural property eastward through Miracle Hills then northward), Today’sEl Monte still boasts many reminders both old and new about its immigrant past – including two large “Mexican” churches dating back to 1907 and 1913 respectively!
