During that time, El Monte became known as “the gateway to Southern California” because of its proximity to LAX and military bases around the region. In recent years, El Monte has seen significant growth in cultural industries such as arts and music festivals, job creation in tech companies, and new development projects including an urban park and downtownication effort。
The town of El Monte began to form in the late 18th century when Spanish settlers arrived in California. The name "El Monte" means "the mountain." The first permanent settler in the area was Manuel Nieto, who erected a cabin on the hilltops overlooking Rancho San Miguel in 1788. From this early outpost, smallpox epidemics decimated the population and many fled or were killed by the disease. Others built homes near present-day downtown El Monte and around Mount Baldy, which became one of the most important natural resources of El Monte. In 1847, Mexican War veteran José Joaquín de Alvarado ordered Captain Gabriel Moraga to land at what is now Downtown El Monte for military purposes. As soon as Moraga's ship anchored off shore, civilian volunteers from throughout Los Angeles County descended on the scene to help with disembarkation and supplies. This event marked an important milestone for El Monte because it demonstrated that locals were not afraid to get involved in American politics and volunteer their time and effort for a common goal. Today, various businesses such as Macy's Department Store (now Sears) occupy coveted corners of Downtown ElMonte while elegant old buildings such as The Masonic Temple remain unchanged since they were constructed during Reconstruction days just prior to World War I. On July 26, 1907 - more than 100 years after founding - Mayor George Norris dedicated City Hall at Fourth Street & Broadway after over $6 million was raised through a variety of fundraising events attended by civic leaders from all over Southern California including mayors of Los Angeles ( Dodson), Pasadena ( Brown), Long Beach ( Whittemore), Ventura ( Callahan) and Chico (Fenway). In 2007/2008, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa renamed 4th Street North between Broadway & Figueroa Streets “Mayor Norris Way” in commemoration of his predecessor’s legacy within our city
