El Cerrito is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 34,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European to see El Cerrito was Juan Bautista de Anza on November 7, 1776 during his visit to Southern California for exploration purposes. He named it "Cerritos" after Mount Diablo in Northern California and called the surrounding area Mare Island because of its large sand dunes. The earliest permanent residents were Spanish missionaries who built missions here from 1821 until 1848. Rancho Cucamonga was granted to Jose Maria Pinole in 1828 and then sold by him to John Sutter in 1851. The City of El Cerrito was incorporated on May 27, 1868 following a referendum vote by citizens of Contra Costa County based on literature submitted by City Manager George Wirths Sr.). In 1915, World War I forced many local businesses out of business and destroyed much of their equipment; however, many new businesses opened up as people streamed into the city looking for work during the war. In 1918-1919, city officials developed Plans No. 1-A and No. 2-A which would have created an inner ring road around the existing streets withincity limits that would have been used mainly by commercial vehicles with no through traffic allowed between certain intersections (the current Martin Luther King Jr.–Emanuel African American High School intersection being one such intersection). However these plans were never implemented due to financial considerations at that time.. The most notorious crime linked with El Cerrito occurred on July 6th 1971 when three men – Ernest Hemingway’s grandson Jack Nicholson and two friends – broke into a home in North Beach and committed murder while fellow guests watched televisions inside; they left behind three innocent people dead including Hemingway's granddaughter Sheen Tranamarca who later became known as "Bojangles". This crime has been labeled as "The Night Of The Living Dead", spawning numerous similar crimes throughout History which are still unsolved today thereto this day including El Cerrito's current Street Name: Humboldt Street after Emilio Estevez who played hemingway's grandson jack smith in cult movie 'Night Of The Living Dead' . On October 3rd 1984 riots erupted between rival gangs members over control of a block party near downtown El Cerrito resulting in dozens injuries although no arrests were made; it set off a chain reaction that led to more violence throughout Contra Costa County for weeks thereafter dubbed ""Operation Mockingbird"" or "Operation Pajama Party." A $2 million dollar study conducted by RAND Corporation found that there is not enough evidence linking gangs or other organized crime with any specific incidents or social problems in El Cerrio but recommended further investigation into possible links involving economic deprivation/urban sprawl etc.; this report also led to increased police presence throughout Contra Costa County beginning Operation Safe Streets which lasted until 1992.. Later that year Michael Jackson performed at Levi’s Stadium adjacent to downtown Los Angeles marking his first performance outside Santa Clara county; thousands turned out for what was billed as “An Evening With Michael Jackson” although security footage released later revealed only about 500 fans were actually present along with several perpetrators operating transparently disguised masks while crowd surfing - thus effectively ending any hopes anyone may have had regarding safety for MJ's highly anticipated concert.. Today one can find small shops located all around town ranging from Trader Joes down to Cost Plus where you can buy anything from groceries right up to clothing racks full of street clothes complete with tags reading “made in el cerrito”–marking yet another example of how quickly things can change here given how close locals feel both physically and emotionally TO their town namesake! Asian grocery stores line Main St., just east of downtown where you will find everything from Panda ExpressChinese takeout restaurants serving some delicious HC Residents enjoy live music every night starting at 8pm featuring locally owned bands followed by dancing until late (known locally as #LIVEband ).
