El Cerrito is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 53,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by population. The first Europeans to visit El Cerrito were Missionaries Father Francisco de Noriega and Father José de San Fernando on July 24, 1769. They named it after the town of El-Ain in Syria that they had just left. On August 9, 1773, Father Anselmojo designated it as the Parish of San Pablo del Monte. In 1847 the City of El Cerrito became a part of Contra Costa County when it was organized from parts of Oakland and Hayward Counties. During World War II residents created and stockpiled food for an impending Japanese attack with goals of disabling their military forces before they could invade China or move into other Pacific Rim countries; however no Japanese troops invaded and no attacks took place in El Cerrito during World War II. The city's namesake comes from early Spanish explorer Rafael Lopez de Velasco who journeyed through this area on his way to found Monterey Bay Colony in Alameda about 1540 A.D.. Upon his return he described seeing "a great bay" extending inland which he called "Cerritos". Englishman John Sutter explored this area in 1846 while exploring route via Sonoma Valley southward along present day Highway 1 then turned north onto what is now Marysville Road and founded Sacramento on November 3rd where he met General Mexican Antonio Lomas y Costilla who told him about Native American villages near today's Redwood National Forest east of Novato also known as Oak Flat although at one point they occupied land east of Mariposa Creek north of today's Hercules Road also know as Sausalito Point although nothing remains there now

In 1849isalvo Jameson erected a sawmill on mill streambed just east of present-day Main Street; he also built a gristmill and foundry hereabouts. He was followed by other entrepreneurs who developed this locality into one of its most important industrial centers during the late 19th century during America'sgolden age (1848-1914). During World War II: 1) Aircraft manufacturing plants: Northrop Grumman (later Northrop Grumman Corporation), McDonnell Douglas (later McDonnell Douglas Co.), Boeing Company; 2) Shipbuilding: A&W Marine (later A&W Navigators Inc.), Gulf Oil Corporation; 3) Textile manufacturing: American Laundromat Company ( later American Greetings ); 4) Chemical manufacture: Union Pacific Railroad ; 5) Retail trade: The Follen brothers grocery store
The first Europeans to visit El Cerrito were the Spanish in 1776. The area was part of Rancho San Pablo, which was granted to José Antonio De Anza by Mexico City governor Manuel de Montoya on November 4, 1777. The rancho extended from Mission Point eastward along the shore of the North Pacific Ocean to what is now Hearst Avenue and Third Street. In 1821, it was divided between two other Mexican landowners, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and Vicente Guerrero y Saenz. In 1853, Commodore John C. Fremont explored the Strait of Juan de Fuca and named it El Cerrito after General Mariano Vallejo who commanded his brigade at that time in California's First War of Independence against Mexico. The name stuck and when a post office was established at El Cerrito in 1871, its first name was changed to reflect this fact - San Francisco Post Office (1871-1889). In 1906, during World War I, American forces burned down many buildings in downtown San Francisco as part of an offensive which aimed to discredit the war effort by demonstrating that America could fight wars successfully even without large cities such as New York or Chicago. This event is sometimes called "The Great Fire" because so many small fires soon followed throughout downtownSan Francisco; it destroyed about 60% of all businesses within five blocks radius around Union Square and destroyed almost all usable materials inside the Golden Gate Bridge.
