It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The first people to live in El Cerrito were Ohlone Native Americans. El Cerrito, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 31,594 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by population and the eighth-largest city in California. The name of the town originated from Spanish settlers who named it "El Cerrito" after San Francisco Peaks. The first post office for El Cerrito was established on December 24, 1872. The town's first mayor was Pio Pico. It became an incorporated city on January 1, 1909 with a population of 30,000 people. On November 4, 1914 the City Council passed a resolution to change its name to "Cerritos" because "it had been suggested that 'Cerritos' would be more accessible to Mexicans." The current name comes from Mexican American ranchers who started settling around here in the late 1800s and early 1900s when they began working their lands as part of cattle drives into Northern Mexico. They brought their herds across the Umpqua River and up through this area which is now known as East Contra Costa County. When they ran out of food or water near Mission Peak some decided to cross over into Oregon where they found fertile land and started growing crops there so they could bring back what goods they could sell back home - thus becoming part of what is now called Latino America in North America. In 1951 El Cerrito voters passed a resolution creating a charter amendment granting voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or sex – something that wasn't possible before because Contra Costa County only allowed white men to vote while Japanese Americans were kept inside internment camps during World War II. The referendum also granted extraterritorial status (meaning that residents could own property outside their native country) to El Cerrito residents including those living on Mission Bayou and parts of downtown east of Highway 26 until then controlled by Taiwan forces responsible for quarantining Chinese Americans during wartime (the last time this happened was 1945). In 1956 Mayor Virgil Goode vetoed council action authorizing annexation by Richmond because he felt it would cause irreparable damage to both cities’ economies combined (Richmond has since annexed El Cerrio proper).
