El Cerrito is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 27,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and is one of its eight cities. The first mention of El Cerrito is in 1847 when it was listed as an agricultural town in a Spanish land grant to José Joaquín de Alvarado. A post office was established at El Cerrito in 1875, and the name became current on October 26, 1876 when the city incorporated under state law. The first Mayor of El Cerrito was Wm Hurlbut. From 1906 until 1960, it was part of Berkeley County; then it became part of Contra Costa County. In 1978, after years of planning by City Manager Don Freeman and City Councilmember Herb Caplan, a new waterpark called Kings Beach opened adjacent to Eastshore Park with over 2 million dollars from county and private donations In 1984-1985 (the same year that BART opened), there were two major gang shootings within blocks of each other: one outside KFC & Playland across from SouthPark Mall (now known as Regency Park) and another just eastside at 7th Street & Porter Road NE (now known as Rucker Plaza). For this reason 8th Street between US Highway 101 & Interstate 5 has been nicknamed "Gang Streets". At that time crime rates had plummeted but inner-city gangs were still active due to lack of street security or police presence downtown which made iteasy for them to operate without fear Shoppers Drug Mart robberies also occurred frequently throughout this period making Downtown very dangerous This article does not discuss gun control laws because those are more complicated than what would be covered here

The community was founded by Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1824 as part of his Rancho San Pablo. A post office called El Cerrito was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1906. Alvarado's heirs sold the rancho to a group led by Commodore John Doolittle for $1 million in 1923. Doolittle turned it over to the United States government during World War II as part of the Great American Defense Initiative program which provided land for military bases throughout California. During World War II, El Cerrito became a major naval base with many construction projects including an airfield and destroyer USS Pascagoula (DD-521). After the war ended, much of this infrastructure was dismantled or destroyed by Hurricane Harvey which made landfall on Texas on 19 August 2017 making it one of the worst US hurricanes since records began.
