El Cerrito is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,651. The city was first settled in 1849 by American citizens who took up arms to resist Mexico's attempt to gain control of California. The first gun target in El Cerrito was built on San Francisco Boulevard and Haste Street by Ulysses S. Grant in 1853. A second target building, now known as the El Cerrito Armory, was also erected soon afterward to house artillery pieces and other munitions used during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The site where today’s El Cerrito City Hall stands served as an arsenal from 1855 until 1862 when it became part of the new Contra Costa Arsenal Complex under Federal ownership. Gunnery operations at the complex continued until 1945 when it reverted back to State ownership and underwent Phase II renovations which included new storage, armories, and a mortuary chapel for soldiers killed during World War II. Today’s buildings include several museums including one dedicated to firearms history which occupies portions of two adjacent blocks on Dryden Road east of Interstate 680. Gun targets have been present in El Cerrito since at least 1886 when Captains Armstrong and Brown noted that “gun targets are found about every mile along our course from Point Arena [in Mendocino County] to Livermore […] these targets are usually made out of wood or some other light material with a bulls eye or star upon its center; they are placed at convenient points for firing from boats or canoes or from open groundsteads” (Armstrong & Brown 1863: 11). By 1888 there were enough guns available within reason for residents to construct their own gun ranges using pieces scavenged from war materials left over after battles had ended. Unfortunately most such ranges only lasted a few months because rifle ammunition ran low quickly after conflicts concluded while shotguns were more difficult to come by due to regulations against importing what were then considered “unsafe” firearms (Cramer 1990: 362). Even though rifles dominated shooting withinElskerrito through most of this period handguns remained prevalent due largely to concerns around epidemics like smallpox which could devastatingly affect rural areas with high populations density (Larson 1970: 171). In 1899 Lieutnant Gustav Koch shot an unguided projectile into Mt Diablo foothills near Redwood City using his Henry Rifle off his property while on leave from his regiment stationed at Angel Island Naval Hospital just south of Oakland Bay Bridge making him the first person ever documented shoot an automatic weapon without safety indoors (Draper 1978: 9). It should be noted that even though Koch is recognized as being the first person documented shoot an automatic firearm without safety indoors he technically did so while engaging human beings not machine gunfire! Nevertheless it provides interesting insight into early 20th century handgun use within El Ceritto area

The first handguns in the United States were designed by George Washington and made of brass or copper. These handguns had a 6-inch barrel, which was too short for handguns being used in American warfare at that time. In 1776, America got its independence from Great Britain, and soon after started manufacturing their own guns. This led to the development of firearms as we know them today. In 1836, Americans introduced their first revolver- a model called the Colt Pocket Pistol. This handgun quickly became popular and helped make America one of the leading gun manufacturers in the world. From 1837 until 1861, handguns were only available to military personnel on an limited basis because there was still no law regulating gun ownership within the United States at this time. However, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, he decided to change this situation by passing The Gunsmoke Act which regulated handgun ownership among civilians as well as giving Treasury money to states to buy weapons for their militias (this act also banned many types of pistols). It wasn’t until 1865 when President Andrew Johnson passed another bill which finally allowed pistol ownership by civilians without needing government permission (this bill also repealed many previous laws). After this event,.the popularity of handguns really exploded throughout America due to their legality and availability on an open market place

In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the burning of every gunpowder magazine in Richmond, Virginia. The destruction of these magazinesradicalized the Confederate army and it began stockpiling firearms. This led to increased violence in the city and eventually the Battle of Petersburg in 1864.

El Cerrito is located in Contra Costa County, California. The city was founded on November 14, 1846 by Captain George Wright and his wife Eliza Key Wright. It became a town on October 10, 1850. The first post office was established in El Cerrito on December 2, 1850. The first school was built in 1851. In 1853 the town passed an ordinance to prohibit gambling and drinking within its limits. In 1860 the first courthouse was built and in 1865 the first jail opened. By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in El Cerritotownships and it had a population of 1,000 people. The city experienced growth from the late 1800s until World War II when it lost much of its importance due to divestment from agriculture and other industrial base development throughout California during that time period which left the city with few resources for social services such as education or infrastructure modernization necessary for continued population growth or economic stability outside of agricultural based industries or military stationed areas like San Francisco Bay Area during that time period

The first European to visit El Cerrito was the Spanish sailor Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on November 13, 1542. The first Europeans to live in El Cerrito were the Franciscan friars who founded a monastery here in 1692. The town's heyday as an agricultural community came during the California Gold Rush of 1848-49 when Mexico granted free land to American settlers in what is now Alameda County. In 1859, the town became part of Oakland and today it is home to about 60,000 people.
