El Cerrito is one of the most diverse cities in California and has a rich history dating back to 1846 when it was part of Rancho San Pablo. Today, El Cerrito continues to grow with its rich cultural heritage and vibrant community spirit. The first European sighting of El Cerrito occurred on December 17th, 1806 by Spanish sailor Juan Bautista de Anza when he sighted land about 12 nautical miles (19 km) northwest of Santa Cruz Island. The name "El Cerritos" was given to the location by Captain Manuel Nieto on November 14th, 1827 following an expedition led by José Joaquin Moraga who had visited that area two years earlier. At the time Mexican land grants were defined as square leagues or tracts of land measuring 1/4 mile (0.8 km). In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General Mariano Vallejo awarded Rancho San Pablo to James Phelan and his family for their assistance in repelling an attack from Mexico City's insurgent forces under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. In 1850, ranchoSanPablo passed into American hands when Phelan sold it to John Sutter who founded Sutter's Fortnightly Telegraph Company in 1861 which later became Pacific Bell Telephone Company. During World War II many residents volunteered their services as soldiers or sailors and formed local companies known as "Cerritos". One such company was the 414th Infantry Regiment which fought in North Africa and Europe before being demobilized at home in 1945. Since incorporation as a city, El Cerrito has seen rapid growth with population increase reaching over 50% between 2000 and 2010 inclusive; this reflected both its booming economy and its increasing diversity which has drawn people from all corners of California and beyond including Asians (14%), Latinos (29%), African Americans (7%) and Europeans (10%). Population density also increased significantly (-3% per year), reflecting continued growth within walking distance of each other while preserving much of its rural character through zoning policies that restrict commercial development within residential areas outside of downtown cores only . El Cerrito is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It was incorporated on July 1, 1853. The population was 26,919 at the 2010 census. El Cerrito is located in the East Bay region of San Francisco Bay. The first human settlement in what is now Contra Costa County was made by Ohlone people who lived along the San Francisco and Sacramento Rivers during the early 19th century. In 1849, Rancho Rinconada land grantee Manuel Nieto built a small cabin near present-day Orinda and occupied it until about 1852 when he sold it to Juan Bautista Alvarado. A mission founded by Franciscan friars in 1776 at Point Reyes Station (near Richmond), California had an initial population of 10 men and 27 women but eventually dissolved due to lack of support from Spain after Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. The Mission Santa Clara de Asís remained active until 1850 while two missions near Petaluma were converted into barracks for the U.S Army during World War II; Concordia Parish also acquired land south of its original boundaries which became part of El Cerrito after 1945. In 1865, Rancho Rinconada member Harney Buena Vista granted a large parcel of land east of Orinda to James Wickersham for $10 per acre ($640 per km²). Wickersham developed this area as known as Buena Vista Heights with residences, schools and other infrastructure built between 1870 and 1880 following his purchase of some adjacent property from José Joaquín Murillo y Costilla for $2 per acre ($8 per km²). Wickersham named his development El Cerrito which means "the Indian Hill". He leased part of his holdings back to Murillo y Costilla for another 20 years until he sold all assets excepting title toBuena Vista Heights to merchant John Sutter on November 6, 1892 for $160,000 (about US$4 million today). On October 15, 1888 Jeronimo Sanchez committed suicide while working on a farm west ofpresent day El Cerrito because he could no longer afford food prices high enough to make farming profitable without new immigrants coming through Ellis Island; henceforth known as Sanchez Flatlands or simply "San Jose" or "Jeronimo'sflat". After Sanchez's death many local farmers banded together formed the Junta de la tierra para medir mejoras en el saneamiento social (Joint Agricultural Committee) which demanded reform measures such as higher Prices paid by landed proprietors subjecting themselves directly to popular vote instead of their landlords; these demands were not met until 1912 when president Porfirio Díaz created four new counties within California - Contra Costa County being one - that would provide much needed revenue for social programs statewide including health care and education hitherto provided only through state taxes levied against landowners estates etc.. The first post office opened at El Cerrito on December 12, 1896 under name Redwood City because all mail received there was sent thence by stages downriver via Stockton before arriving at Market Street Depot in downtown San Francisco where it was sorted and delivered into individual letters or parcels before finally reaching its destination via steamship across the bayou below Russian Hill Bridge (). The predecessor company organized under this name serving portionsof Contra Costa County existed since1885 however correspondence moved outgrowing that facility soon thereafter so a new Post Office Building constructed westlake Boulevard between 5th Avenue South and 7th Avenue North opened July 12 1909 bearingidentity with then newest downtown San Francisco post office building designed by architect George Wrightson (1868–1940) just blocks away!
