El Cerrito is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit El Cerrito were Spanish explorers who named it "Cerritos" for a small hill near its location on December 7, 1602. The name was anglicized to El Cerrito in 1853 by Captains George Vancouver and David Livingstone when they visited the area on their exploring voyage of discovery. The town began as an agricultural community with land grants from Spain and Mexico. In 1868, gold was discovered in el Cerrito and quickly became the town's most prolific industry; prior to that, rice had been the primarystay of its economy. The first post office opened in 1872. By 1890, El Cerrio had developed into one of Northern California's largest towns with over 6,000 residents; however annexed by Oakland in 1901 due to lack of grazing lands east of San Pablo Avenue (then called Telegraph Road), it dwindled until reaching its current size only after annexation by Contra Costa County in 1968 did not affect its growth rate because annexation takes place at census-designated places within counties rather than through territory change as occurred withEl Cerrito Peninsula." There are now three high schools located here - Alta Vista HS (La Jolla), Valley View HS (Mountain View) and Diablo Valley HS (Redwood City). There are also two middle schools located here - Carleton Middle School and Stonington Middle School - which serve students from prekindergarten through 8th grade as well as one private school for students age 9-12 which is known as Sable Rock Academy/Sable Rock Preparatory School (). Elementary school students attend either Castro Street or Mountain View Avenue public schools while those between K-6 attend either La Jolla Early Childhood Center or Redwood City Charter Schools (). A new High School has just opened up nearby on Hearst Drive called Jurupa Hills HS! It will be moved closer to main campus later this year so that all 3 high schools can have a single entrance! All other public high school students go to Oakland Technical High School currently across MacArthur Blvd from my house... more on that later!

In 1872, there was an outbreak of cholera that killed nearly seventy-five people; in 1865, there was a large earthquake that destroyed many buildings and injured many more; and in 1906, there was another large earthquake that destroyed much property and left many people homeless. Despite these problems, however, El Cerrito continued to grow rapidly and become one of the mostimportant cities on the west coast. Today, El Cerrito is home to over two thousand people who live primarily within its boundaries. The city has developed several famous landmarks including The University of California at Berkeley (which is located within its borders), USS Constitution Museum (which is located just outside its limits), Giants Stadium ( which is located just outside its limits), and dozens of other businesses and services which contribute significantly to its well-being.
The first permanent American settlement in El Cerrito was made by Stephen F. Austin in 1821. The community was named after Pedro Calderon de la Hoz, the governor of California at the time. The townspeople had to fight off Mexican forces who tried to take over the land in 1835. After a few years, the Americans started farming and trading with Mexicans and other Native Americans. By 1840, there were about 150 people living in El Cerrito. In 1851, most of the settlers left for richer opportunities in Oregon and Nevada. A few people stayed until 1860 when they were forced out by a military campaign led by General Mariano Vallejo.
