In 1865, a school superintendent named John D'Auria established a school here for students from Contra Costa County and Oakland Municipal Districts; he also built a small chapel here in 1870. A dry goods store and grocery began operating on Seventh Street between Center and Park Avenues in 1875; this store remain open today as Del Monte Grocery Company (now Safeway). After numerous fires destroyed homes and businesses around downtown El Cerrito during 1906-1907, Mayor William Fetterman ordered that all fire hydrants be turned off within one mile (1 km) of any business or building except churches, schools, hospitals or military quarters...this order resulted in many waterlogged streets throughout downtown which still exist today." In 1907 there were 9 saloons with 100 seats each along Main Street between Townsend Avenue and Broadway Avenue near City Hall Plaza where prohibitionist candidate James Mallow won an election against incumbent Democrat Hiram Johnson by 103 votes to 58%. In 1912 another prohibitionist nominee Harry Bridges won an election against incumbent Democrat Woodrow Wilson by 312 votes to 98%. After Prohibition ended in 1933, alcohol became available only through controlled sales schemes set up by state agencies like the Alcoholic Beverage Control Administration (ABC). This created new problems for El Cerrio because most citizens still drank retail wine while driving across town to buy liquor at local stores run by state entities like ABC—a practice that continued until about 1984 when Proposition 13 made purchasing wine online illegal statewide. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. El Cerrito is home to Carquinez Strait National Wildlife Refuge and Point Reyes National Seashore. The first Europeans to visit El Cerrito were Spanish missionaries in 1769. They named it "Los Cerritos" after a now vanished tribe of Coast Miwok Indians that lived in what is now downtown El Cerrito. As early as 1824, Captain George Vancouver mapped out what became the town site on Decatur Creek between Mount Diablo and Pascua Hill with his ship HMS Discovery. He named it Point Reyes Station after Francis Drake's failed attempt to find a passage from Asia to North America through Baja California (now Mexico). In 1839, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in nearby Livermore Valley; this led directly to El Cerrito's growth as a stop on stagecoach routes from Sacramento through Sonoma County into Northern California. In 1847, General Mariano Vallejo founded an agricultural colony called Rancho Rinconada del Norte near present-day Hayward on Janus Heights Road northeast of today’s city limits. This new land grant included much of modern El Cerrito including most of its current neighborhoods and lots where they still grow crops today are being developed for housing or other purposes according to plans submitted by residents during recent planning sessions which have been held monthly since 2006 when community members began working together as residents' advocate group focused on issues such as transportation infrastructure improvement and plaza enhancement/renovation not only within their own neighborhood but also across different areas within Contra Costa County overall." In 1868, violence erupted between Mexican American settlers who had taken up residence along Coyote Creek about two miles east of downtown Los Angeles over water rights granted by Vallejo to ranch hands who could irrigate their land singlehandedly rather than through purchase from landowners contiguous with them—a situation that would later be resolved by the creation ofranchos throughout much of inland Southern California under Mexican rule followingalese expansionism." On Apr 26th 1870 Oakland citizens organized themselves into a Committee for Reform Movements called "Citizens Against Unlawful Land grabbing" after seeing reports forwarded by Judge Augustus Porter regarding large tracts of privately owned Rancho Rinconada lands suddenly becoming available for settlement beyond Coyote Creek area especially northwest corner bounded by Webster Street & Harrison Avenue inside City Limits then extending southeast bounded by Justine Street (now MacArthur Boulevard), First Street NE & Hwy 101W then turning NW towards Livermore Valley until finally reaching points east & west side limits now forming Airport boundaries with City Limits
