When news reached America that war had been declared against Mexico on August 2nd, Commodore Dixon decided to abandon his shipwrights' colony in order to return home before any hostilities started. He left behind over two hundred seamen who would continue construction on Point Drake Naval Station until 1865 when it was abandoned due to fears of Mexican attack; during this time point there were only eight houses in downtownEl Cerrio! On October 15th 1861 Captain George Ayer established an important military post at Point Drake with artillery batteries manned by volunteers from Contra Costa County including those from your house!
