In 1857, El Cerrito was founded on the bay in San Francisco by Manuel Nieto and his family. The town grew quickly and soon became a major port for goods moving from the Bay Area to Europe and Asia. In 1907, the city of El Cerrito annexed the neighboring community of Geronimo which at that time had a population of only 60 people. The first schools in El Cerrito were built in 1909-1910. The area now known as Downtown was developed during World War II as an ammunition dump and then as housing for military personnel and their families. In 1973, Mayor Dianne Feinstein declared El Cerrito "the City of Tomorrow" with an aggressive planning program aimed at creating new jobs, expanding transportation options, increasing education opportunities, and preserving historic resources.
El Cerrito is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 37,746 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The name El Cerrito comes from Spanish for "the green place," and refers to the historical presence of oak trees in the area. The original settlement was near what is now Hearst Castle. In 1853, J. P. Morgan bought some acres of land east of town and named it Morgan Hill after him and his friend James Pierpont Morgan Jr.. The community rapidly grew because of its location between San Francisco and Oakland, with access to both markets and transportation links. During World War II El Cerrito became an American military airbase providing fighter-bombers for Operation Overlord; it also served as a transit point for troops moving into and out of Japan during that time. Due to its strategic location within Contra Costa County, El Cerrito housed many large companies such as McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company (later Lockheed Martin) before they moved out or were acquired by other companies over time. In recent years El Cerrito has seen significant growth in industry due to new development along Interstate 880 which has led to increased traffic congestion on nearby streets including MacArthur Boulevard/Folsom Street and Kaiser Drive/Ashbury Avenue

The first binoculars used lenses made of two different types of glass, but with improved optics, it was soon realized that a single lens could be used to make both eyes work together in order to see objects at a distance. In 1795, John James Audubon started making binoculars using lenses made from fused quartz and round Prismatic glasses. By 1800, the popularity of binoculars had spread throughout Europe and the United States. There were several variations on how binoculars worked over time, but they all consisted of a pair of eyeglasses with either one or two lenses each (the “binocular” form). With advances in technology over the years, including better materials and manufacturing processes for optics and other parts of the binocular body, more people are now able to enjoy this popular pastime without having to break the bank.

El Cerrito is a city in San Francisco County, California. The population was 7,382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco's urban area and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the south, Interstate 880 to the east, and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) tracks to the north. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now El Cerrito were Missionaries of Santa Clara who built a small mission in 1795. In 1846, Rancho San Antonio de la Costa was granted to Captain George C. Smith for his horse ranch that stretched from Antioch eastward through present-day El Cerrito and parts of Richmond Heights and Walnut Creek. At this time there were only about 100 people living in El Cerrito. In 1853, Wm Hurlbut became head buyer for Rancho San Antonio de la Costa which extended into Contra Costa County. On July 15, 1853 Hurlbut made an agreement with Elisha Chapin giving him title to all land within three miles of Alamo Square (now part of Oakland). One year later he sold out his interest in Rancho San Antonio de la Costa to James Irvine who named it "El Cerrito". On October 14, 1875 Anthony Burgess purchased 1/2 acres (0 km²) near what is now Noe Valley from Jno Neely Bean for $200 ($4 per acre). Burgess had come across a map which depicted 1600 acres (500 ha) on issue called Rancho Seco belonging to Manuel Nieto but no one had claimed it since it had been part of Rancho Allende Grant given back by Mexican governor José Joaquin De Mendizábal days after Mexico's independence from Spain on November 10th1821. El Cerrito was founded in 1847 as part of the Rancho San Pablo Mexican land grant to José Joaquín de Urquiza. In 1868, it became a city and was incorporated as a village in 1912. El Cerrito experienced significant growth from the late 1800s until World War II, when it declined due to population loss and economic decline. Since the 1990s, El Cerrito has seen significant redevelopment, which has led to an increase in population and job opportunities.
