El Centro is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It was founded on November 3, 1849 by American businessman and politician George W. DeForest as the first town in the area. The name "El Centro" comes from the Spanish word "el centro" meaning center or focus. The metropolitan area has a population of 1,883,545 people and is making up almost one-third of all the county's employment base. The project focuses on developing community resources that can be used to teach about various aspects of El CentRO's history including its role within American culture during the 1800s and 1900s; its connections with Mexico through missionary efforts; and how these ties have shaped both local community life and U.S.-Mexico relations today (Fletcher 2002). Recently excavated evidence suggests that some aspects of this history may still be relevant for contemporary residents (Kremer & Gonzales 2007). In addition to teaching students aboutEl CentRO's past, this typeof research also provides valuable insights into understanding current issues surroundingthe citycenter areaand Hispanic identity in Southern California (). As mentioned earlier, one important aspectofElCentrodepressionduringthe1930sand40swasthepossibilitythatLatinoimmigrantswouldreplace Anglo workersinmany industries(Gonzalez 2005), although little empirical data existsTodatetosupportthisclaim.(Lopez 2003). Although many challenges remain Miller & Gonzalez (2007a) suggest that "the 1965 Watts Riots were more likely related to problems encountered among low income Latinos than [were] issues faced by white Anglo-Saxons." Additionally undocumented immigrants continue face significant discrimination throughout AMERICA despite having legal rights under U.S law ()(Miller et al,. 2008). For examplemigrantworkers earning minimum wage are not protected from overtime entitlements afforded nonimmigrant workers (), nor are they automatically given access to job training or health insurance ().
