By 1901 there were 10 stores with a population of 30 residents each within what is now Downtown El Centro. A postoffice building (now part of City Hall) occupied Second Street between Main Avenue and Broadway Avenue from 1911 to 1960; mail service stopped there when the original building became City Hall Annex #2 due to its age and decay. During World War II many patriotic Americans made their homes here including numerous members of Congress such as Floyd Muntz who represented District 2 from 1942-1945; Representative Don Edwards who represented District 8 from 1976-1981; Representatives Bob Dornan (1949-1975), Darrell Issa (2003-2007), Darrell Issa Jr., Kevin McCarthy (2015–present), Filemon Vela (2019–present). On July 17, 2007 Mayor Jerry Sanders announced his candidacy for re-election against Republican incumbent Ron Roberts but lost narrowly 50% to 48%. In early 2014 Mayor Sanders endorsed then State Controller Elaine Martinez for her bid for county supervisor against current Supervisor Ohana Yee—the first openly gay person ever elected into a major local political office in California—and also helped organize a protest outside Martinez’s election campaign headquarters after she refused to remove her portrait from public property following passage of Proposition 8 nationwide which legalized same sex marriage nationwide despite vehement opposition within much of Southern California On November 3rd 2020 something very special happened as Jerry Sanders announced he would be running again for reelection but this time he run as an Independent candidate .
