The City of El Centro is located in the Mexican state of Baja California on the coast of Southern California. The population was 165,052 as of 2010, making it the second most populous city in Baja California after Tijuana. In 1834 a group of merchants from Monterey petitioned Governor Alvarado for permission to establish a town within their possession onshore near Point Conception; this request was granted and plaza Nueva became the nucleus around which future el centros grew. In 1840 Antonio Gomez opened what is now called Don Antonio’s Rancho de las Americas just east of Plaza Nueva; this rancho became one of the largest cotton plantations in North America and employed over 100 workers until its closure in 1907 due to environmental hazards caused by oil production offshore. Many buildings still extant from this time are associated with Gomez’s plantation such as Don Antonio’s House (1848), Storehouse (1852), and Chapel (1854). The land was used for grazing and agricultural purposes until it was given to Juan Francisco de la Hoz y Costilla in 1836, who set up a small mission on the property. In 1839, Costilla sold the mission to José Joaquín Alvarado y Valdés, who named the town after himself, alvarado meaning "warrior" and "valde" meaning "place." After Mexico lost its war with Spain in1846, California became part of the United States of America. On January 6, 1850, Mexico ceded California to America at a time when it still held East Texas and much of southern New Mexico. With this gain came full control over El Centro and its surroundings.
