El Centro is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California. It is located on the Southern Pacific Railroad east of Redlands, and was once a important junction for travelers between El Paso, Texas and Sacramento. The community was founded in 1875 by Mexicans working on the railroad. During World War II, El Centro played a significant role as a military airbase during the El Centro-Baja California Campaign. In 1945, it became the first town in America to be bombed by Japan when its bombers attacked Tokyo's Yokohama Municipal Power Plant. Today, El Centro is one of the most economically vibrant communities in southern California. Its Hispanic population has grown rapidly since 1990 with many businesses opening up around downtown including restaurants and cafes, as well as two hospitals and several universities. There are also several stores open 24/7 that cater to the local Latino community.

El Centro, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 97,362 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Diego and the second-largest city in Orange County. El Centro is located on the eastern bank of San Diego Bay and shares borders with Imperial Valley to the north and east, Riverside to the south and west, and Escondido to the northwest. The present-day City of El Centro was founded by Mexicans who arrived as part of Spanish colonialism in 1821. The name "El Centro" means "the center." In 1860, when Mexico gained its independence from Spain, El Centro became part of Mexican territory as part of Coahuila y Tejas (today's Baja California). In 1892, when a railroad link was built between Los Angeles and Coalinga through central San Bernardino County, merchants began to move into what is now downtown El Centro from rural areas around town. Business flourished until an 1886 fire destroyed most of downtown La Jolla; business revived with construction of new buildings on Second Street near Broadway during 1890-1891. A post office called “Centenario” was established at what is now First Street and Main Avenue in 1892; it continued operation until 1915. During World War II many local businesses produced munitions for America's military effort including shipbuilding yards at Long Beach Harbor and Wilmington Harbour on Long Beach Island; printing presses at Fuller & Wells Printing Company off US Highway 8 near present day North Fifth Avenue;[1] aircraft manufacturers Douglas Aircraft Products Corporation (DAP) on North Seventh Avenue opposite Ivey Hall before facilities were moved to Point Loma State Park during 1945-1946;[2] homebuilders/developers Bob Hope Homes (HOPE) beginning operations along Fifth Avenue just east of Interstate 5 before they relocated onto Woodward Boulevard adjacent to Navy Yard where they remain today

In 1821, Mexican traders founded El Centro on the banks of the San Andreas River. It soon became a thriving town and served as a commercial center for California. The town was named after theCENTRO, or CENTER, of Spanish missions in Northern Mexico. The first permanent residents of El Centro were Mexican traders and their families who arrived in 1827. In 1838, American settlers arrived in what is now El Centro and started to develop the area around it. By 1840, there were over 150 people living in El Centro. During the gold rush of 1849-51,El Centro became one of the most important centers for trade because it was located at an important crossroads where wagon roads crossed the San Andreas River. In 1850, when gold was discovered near Yreka, California (now Ukiah), El Centro quickly grew into a major city due to its successful trade with both Californians and Mexicans. On January 25th, 1862, during General Ampudo's Raid on Sacramento County (now Alameda County),El Centromontaneans supported him as well as fighting against Mexican forces under General Joaquin Cepeda y Mejía. Aftermath of this raid led to increased competition between American miners and Mexican gold miners and resulted in much violence in California mining towns such as Chico and Fillmore Valley between American settlers and Mexicans
