The growth of El Centro led to increased problems with water supply and garbage collection which caused social unrest in later years until corrective measures were put in place such as annexation of nearby cities in 1947-1948 (Alameda and Richmond) and 1959-1960 (Walnut Creek). By 1975 there were over 100 businesses in downtown El Centro employing over 1400 people producing $1 billion worth of goods annually for Californians domestically and abroad. Today tourism continues to be one of El Centro's mainstay industries accounting for nearly 60% ($27 million) of its employment earnings while also generating millions in tax revenue; total spending within downtown during 2013 exceeded $10 million making it one of America's most vibrant tourist destinations.
