Before the arrival of Europeans in El Centro, California, there were Native Americans who lived here for over 10,000 years. The area that is now El Centro was first inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. In 1769, Hernando de Soto discovered and named this area San Gabriel Valley after Saint Gabriel (Latin: Gabriel). In 1821, Mexican citizens and military officers decided to make El Centro their new capital. They named the area La Victoria because it was then under Spanish rule. The first Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1827 and named the town after themselves – George Custer’s Rancho San Miguel de Allende (not to be confused with today’s city of Sacramento). Spanish colonists brought firearms with them when they came to California. One of these guns was a dirk called an adelanto. This weapon had a sharp blade at one end and a round buttstock at the other. It was used as a training tool for soldiers before they became battle-ready. El Centro is a city in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 41,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area. The El Centro area was first populated by Ohlone people in the mid-19th century. The City of Los Angeles annexed Ohlone land east of Rancho Santa Fe in 1886 and named it after Count Don Carlos de Valdez, who had purchased land from the Mexican government around that time. In 1892, when Southern Pacific Railroad built its line through El Paso and San Bernardino counties, they station workers at Rancho del Norte to build a bridge over the Canadian River there and name their new town "El Centro". When Southern Pacific Railway gave up its rights to build that bridge in 1922, El Centro became an independent city. In 1951 El Centro designated itself as a sanctuary for refugees from Laos due to then-President Dwight Eisenhower's decision not to admit refugees from Communist China into the United States until he was sure that America's commitment to freedom would not be violated. That year also saw the first African American graduate of Caltech: Dr. Julius Erving (later known as Julius Erving Sr.). In 1957 Mayor Joe Horn agreed with City Councilwoman Rita Moreno that downtown should be redeveloped into a mixed-use district with office space andresidential buildings on one side and commercial areas on the other side; this called for demolition of all but two buildings in downtown before construction could begin on what would come to be known as Main Street Plaza—the original site of City Hall and most important retail districts within downtown El Centro today). Construction began in 1959 on what would become One Main Street plaza, now home to many businesses including Sears Holding Corporation (now Sears), JCPenney Co., Macy's Department Store No 2 (now Neiman Marcus), Kmart Inc., Staples Inc., eBay Inc., Apple Incorporated (then Jobs & Company) and several restaurants such as Nobu Yoshioka's Matsuhisa Japanese Restaurant & Seafood Emporium El Centro has seen various changes throughout its history; some examples include becoming majority Latino following annexation by Los Angeles in 1986; experiencing significant growth during World War II due to military industrialization; declining fortunes during the 1960s through economic hard times which led to largescale redevelopment between 1970s and 1980s; increasing prosperity since 2000 through gentrification efforts spearheaded by Downtown Merchants Association president Gustavo Arellano; recent resurgence brought about by increased recreational use along Interstate 805 leading some business owners back intotown center seeking more direct access away from Interstate 10 freeway traffic
The first Europeans to explore and map the area around El Centro were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his sailing vessel, San Francisco. In 1542, Hernán Cortés arrived in Alta California and claimed the land for Spain. The Petrified Forest was discovered in 1848 by James McDougal while exploring the region. The area became a center of trade with Central America, Mexico, and Peru. After California gained statehood in 1850, El Centro became one of its largest cities. In 1907, an express train collided with a locomotive near El Centro killing all six passengers and taking down part of the track
