El Centro, California is a city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 81,041 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in California after Los Angeles and San Diego. El Centro is bordered by Contra Costa County to the north, Alameda County to the east, Kern County to the south and Silicon Valley to the west. The name "El Centro" means "Center of The World." This phrase came from Spanish settlers who first arrived in this area in 1847 and named it Paso de las Vegas because they found a watering spot on their journey from Santa Fe. The name stuck and was anglicized to ElCentro in 1928 when it became part of San Francisco. The original downtown core of El Centro was built between 1909 and 1912 as an experimental city designed by architect George design for high-density housing developments called Plan Bijou which were then being erected along Market Street near City Hall. In 1916, during World War I, El Centro served as a military airfield used by United States forces until 1945; today it is home to many local businesses that have survived since then including Myer's Department Store (now Macy's) and Jardin Botanical Gardens (now known as Central Park). In 1929, plans were made for what would become downtown El Centro again with new construction taking place around Broadway at First Street; however due to financial difficulties within several years most of this work stopped and only some remnants remain today. Downtown redevelopment continued through the 1940s with shopping malls emerging such as Richmond Town Center (1946), Glenview Plaza (1948), Walnut Creek Plaza (1950), Imperial Valley Plaza mall (1952), Fair Oaks Mall (1956) and finally Northridge Mall which opened in 1958 adjacent to Interstate 680 just north of downtown El Centros original core. During this time much art was produced within downtown limits including: Saul Bass' mural “The Mexican Revolution” which still hangs inside City Hall; Jack Kerouac's poem “Onward” etched into concrete outside McDonalds restaurant on Main Street; Edward Munch's Scream painting executed directly over Highway 99 just south of town center; Douglas MacArthur's bust originally located on Elmira Avenue now displayed at South High School across from Chavez Ravine Park before going up for sale in 1984; Freddy Fender guitars created especially for Sears Tower showroom windows featuring an unpainted plywood model complete with electronics equipment stored inside - one example can be seen atrium level of Sears Tower today It should be noted that not all aspects associated with early 20th century El Centros development are still visible or well known today such as: planters dotting busy streets outside old movie theaters where flowers used once grew; unique architecture specific to each neighborhood such as Mission District buildings dating back two centuries while other neighborhoods like Midtown experienced little or no development until recently decades later Likewise much later demolition took place both outside traditional commercial districts like Midtown along International Boulevard while newer areas sprung up opposite Interstate 580 near Sather Gate Shopping Center creating something resembling anew renaissance district centered around Pioneer Square - see photo below illustrating recent gentrification efforts underway Many restaurants closed down during these years but others thrived such As Ruth Eckerdys BBQ offshoot Ruth Eckerdys BBQ & Grill(later Red Lobster) moved into former movie theater building on Sacramento Avenue shortly after its closure along with Arby's fast food chain moving into formerly occupied office building next door soon afterwards becoming one of Californias largest restaurant chains . Finally Johnny Rockets relocated from long time rival Disneyland opening their first store in downtown El centros newly renovated Raytheon Tower complex also containing Art Deco styled hotels/resorts nearby . 1980s saw increased Hispanic immigration making way for more cultural diversity throughout central valley causing displacement among native Anglo residents resulting in various gangs originating from various socio-economic backgrounds coming together seeking opportunities . Today there continuesto be significant Latino presence throughout much central valley although crime rates continueto increase particularly towards nightlife areas commonly frequented by foreigners ....

After World War II ended, El Centrop closed its doors for good in 1951 but has since been reborn as a small community committed to economic development with strong ties to Los Angeles County
El Centro was founded on December 21, 1847 by Jose Maria Garza and his brother Francisco Garza. The first post office in El Centro was established on April 12, 1848. The town of El Centro was incorporated as a city on March 6, 1889. The City of El Centro became a state capital on February 17, 1912.
