El Centro is a small city in southern California, located about 20 miles west of Los Angeles. The population was 909 at the 2000 census. It is situated on the edge of the Kern County seat of Bakersfield and is bordered by El Centro to the south and east, Chatsworth to the north, and Claremont to the west. The town was founded in 1884 by Spanish Americans who fled Rancho San Rafael, which had been acquired by Mexican cattle ranchers. The name "El Centro" means "the center." Despite its name change in 1931, El Centro has remained an agricultural center with a significant retail trade. The downtown area includes a large movie theater and several other businesses. The city's history can be traced back to 1884 when some Spaniards who had fled Rancho San Rafael landed at what is now El Centro from various parts of Mexico City. They established a ranch near present-day Bakersfield called Rancho San Gabriel de las Pulgas (later renamed Rancho San Antonio). In 1885, they married settlers from Chatsworth and formed a partnership known as La Casa Blanca (The White House). A year later, they purchased 553 acres (2 km2) of land northeast of downtown for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). In 1886, La Casa Blanca sold their holdings to Manuel Nieto Sr., who foundedmining company La Huasteca Nacional de California (LHNC), which became one of America's leading copper producers. Later that year, Nieto organized fellow militia members into Companies Cervantes y Pacheco (C&P) to purchase more land east of Bakersfield from Mexican ranchers in order to establish ranchos there. LHHNC built its first coal mine at Agua Dulce in 1888; it produced coal until 1911 when it shifted focus to gold mining operations. In 1901–02, LHNC leased 2 million acres (10 km2) of desert central California open Range country for grazing sheep without means or title so that he could lease it out under right-of-way leases; this led eventually to his creation of both CHPAC and PAN American Mining Company which becameinersourcecontrolcompanyamerica(Icc). By 1916 LHNC owned 8% interest in Icc and were able to wrest control away from American Coal & Coke Company after being sued for antitrust violations; these activities eventually led him into receivership.. He reorganized his business as Chico Manufacturing Company Limited while still executive director/manager CHPAC; however due organizational problems within Icc he relinquished all management duties there on October 1st 1923 but continued as honorary chairman emeritus.. After failing multiple times during World War II with no end in sight he closed his plants including mines at Agua Dulce and Sleepy Valley along with all associated mills between 1945-1947 leaving over 100 employees unemployed.. On July 15th 1951 EL CENTRO CITY TOWN HOLDERS ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED was organized under English common law statutes following liquidation proceedings brought against his former companies Ltd., Chico Manufacturing Company Limited et al... At formal organization meeting held on July 25th 1951 officers elected Wm HARRISON Presidentelect Wm DAVIDSON Treasurer Emeritus Geo JONES Secretary Emeritus... The new corporation adopted its name "Chico Manufacturing Corporation" Incorporating articles dated September 6th 1951 effective immediately.. On January 3rd 1957 EL CENTRO CITY TOWN HOLDERS ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED changed its name againtoChico Industries Corporation effective February 14th 1957... After years wrangling over succession issues among heirs apparent various changes have occurred with respect thereto such as merger into larger corporations etc....... Today there are only three individuals remaining active shareholders viz.... Mr Davidson w/ Executive Management Rights Mrs Jane Goodall w/ Membership Only rights
