The first El Centro post office was established in 1875. The town of El Centro was incorporated in 1887. In 1916, the city's first hospital was built. The city became a full-fledged county in 1919 and had its own sheriff and fire brigade. In 1975, El Centro joined the United States as a result of the Local Assistance Act of 1974.
El Centro is a city in the Central California region of the United States. The population was 66,055 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Humboldt County. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is also included in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near what is now downtown El Centro. They built their first villages there around 10,000 BC. By AD 300, they had founded El Cenizo on present-day Bancroft Way between First and Second Streets. One such leader was Chief Takahomihi (1492–1568). In 1846 Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna occupied Alta California, including El Centro and most of Humboldt County. American troops arrived soon afterward to protect settlers from Mexican retribution. Captain James Wolkentin's 4th Infantry Regiment marched into town on November 15, 1846 to find over 1,000 Mexicans inside buildings throughout downtown El Centro preparing for battle against Ulysses S. Grant's 3rd Infantry Regiment which was surrounding them at Fort Yuma on adjacent Hill 712 The Mexicans fled before any hostilities began but Wolkentin's regiment sustained heavy casualties In an engagement lasting several hours they drove off an estimated 400 Mexicans with only 16 men killed or wounded while 8 others were taken prisoner This victory helped give impetus to American settlement in this area Commodore John Dively appointed lieutenant colonel George Vancouver as commander of U.S.-Mexico military force stationed at Presidio Heights Monterey about two miles northeast of town He ordered Lieutenant Colonel Owen Jarrell with Company K (4th Uhlans) to take possession of all plaza east side street from First Street northward Jarrell reported that he found no building fit for human habitation so he placed his company outside limits whereupon Vancouver ordered him back inside Limits After further skirmishes between Uhlans andMexican soldiers over control of plazaJarrell retreated about one-and-a-half miles eastward until within 500 feet of new presidio boundary then halted again because numberless small fires were burning among trees south side streets leading up Presidious Hills On January 17, 1847 Vancouver ordered Jarrell back into limits just beyond old presidio boundary thenceforth called Barracks Row since there was now no more plaza east side street within limits US Troops left garrisoning Presidio Heights Monterey after Mexican War ending on February 22,1847 when Mexico ceded all Californias excluding Humboldt County to US
