The following year saw the opening of John F Kennedy Airport within walking distance of downtown El Centro; this led to increased development around airports throughout Northern California which continue today with vast tracts devoted to office parks and other commercial uses dwarfing any remaining residential neighborhoods or open space (Lopez 2009). With its growing Hispanic population came increased expectations for public services including health care and education; both were provided through public agencies such as la UNICA hospital until 1978 when private enterprise took over (Epps 2006a). In 1848, construction began on what is now Downtown El Centro when the town of Rancho Santa Fe was platted around what is today First National Bank building on Second Street. A year later, another bank-the First National Bank of Los Angeles-was also founded in downtown El Centro. During the 1850s and 1860s, El Centro experienced rapid growth as an agricultural center due to its location at the foot of mountains and its access to irrigation water supplies. Many new businesses were founded here including grocery stores, breweries, tanneries, pharmacies, hotels/motels and other transportation options. One of the most famous buildings in Downtown El Centro is the County Courthouse which was completed in 1886 and has been used as a courthouse since that time. Additionally, many churches were constructed during this time including Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral (1868), St John’s Episcopal Church (1875), Christmastime services at Calvary Baptist Church (1892) and Spanish Rite Cathedral (1910). Downtown El Centro experienced a major revival during the 1960s through 1970s when it became a center for nightlife and cultural events such as rock concerts and art festivals. However,ElCenturo quickly lost popularity after being overshadowed by more popular neighborhoods such as North Hollywood or Westwood Village while still retaining some of its historical significance including THE GAS STATION where gas stations have been located continuously since 1914
