El Centro is a city in the San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 31,353 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in California after Los Angeles. El Centro is home to many businesses and government agencies that support a diverse economy with a number of industries including technology, aerospace manufacture and research, healthcare services, retail trade and manufacturing. Armed forces have been stationed in El Centro for years as part of the California Army National Guard; it has also been the location of military installation such as Fort Irwin (1911-2013), Camp Pendleton (1917-present) and Vandenberg Air Force Base (1983-present). In 1933, when California became an American state, El Centro became its first incorporated municipality. At that time only men were allowed to vote.
