By 1870, La Jolla Cove was home to some 10 percent of all Californians living outside Mexico City or Sonora because they could not get land elsewhere because it had been granted only to Mexican landowners. In 1915, World War I veteran Joséfina María Herrera y Costilla donated 160 acres (65 ha) east of downtown Los Angeles to be used as a military airfield during World War I. As a result, El Centro became one of the few cities in Southern California that had airfields before World War II. The Japanese bombedLos Angeles on December 7th 1941 during World War II and destroyed most buildings within the city limits including City Hall and Loyola University Hospital; however no damage was done to El Centro which remained unharmed due to its isolation from other parts of Southern California affected by war bombardment.
