El Cajon is a small city in San Diego County, California. The population was 44,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of Lake Elsinore, about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of downtown San Diego and about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Carlsbad. The first people to live in what is now El Cajon were the Tongva Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and fruits near Mission Bay. In 1821, Juan Bautista de Anza discovered what would become El Cajon when he landed onshore while sailing from Santa Barbara to San Diego. He named it after Comal Pueblo chief Manuel Nieto's Rancho del Rinconcito on Rinconada Creek east of present-day Mission Viejo. In 1846, a group of Franciscan missionaries established the mission here called Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe convent; they arrived during Mexican rule of California following independence from Spain. The mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1847 but rebuilt soon afterward with help from American settlers including James Irvine who donated land for the new missions at Point Conception and Monterey Peninsula west of Sausalito. The town started as a collection of adobe huts along Rinconada Creek that served as workshops for early farmers growing crops such as tomatoes, corn, beans and watermelon. By 1870 there were over 100 businesses in town with a population estimated at 3,000 residents; today many business areas are surrounded by residential neighborhoods or have been replaced by large shopping malls catering to modern sensibilities rather than traditional rural values which remain strong throughout much of El Cajon's history . One street in particular has retained its old commercial heart - 5th Street between US 101W and Interstate 5E - with several hundred shops still open down this well-known corridor dating back to pioneer times: Started as Main Street Methodist Church Road ran south from it along current US 101W before turning east into Mexico Drive; later Business District Rd.; then 4th Street Wagon Wheel Turnpike turned north into Indian Loop until reaching its current terminus at I5 across from CASA Honda home

The following year saw the opening of its first storehouse when City Council voted to construct a building for the City Manager's office near downtown. In 1907, El Cajon experienced its first major boom when oil discoveries were made east of Interstate 5 in Whatcom County; this caused many people to move into El Cajon from what is now eastern San Diego County during this time period. However, by 1930s all economic activity in El Cajon had stopped due to declines in farmland prices and regional unemployment during World War II which devastated both local businesses and labor pools throughout Southern California resulting in large numbers of displaced citizens seeking jobs elsewhere within four years leading to significant decay and displacing industries across entire metropolitan areas including Los Angeles County
