El Cajon was founded in 1847 by Mexican immigrants as Rancho San Diego de Alcalá. The name El Cajon comes from the Spanish word “calzada” meaning “paths” and “donación,” meaning gift. The area now known as El Cajon was first settled by Native Americans, who were probably the Kumeyaay people. In 1847, a group of Spanish-Americans led by José Antonio Altamirano purchased the Rancho San Diego de Alcalá from the Kumeyaay people for $200. They named their new settlement El Cajon after General José Antonio Arguelles y Costilla, who had helped them purchase the land. The town of El Cajon began to develop rapidly after it was established in 1847. By 1870, it had over 100 residents and had cut off access to hills near downtown by constructing a series of stockades. In 1874, local merchants formed what is now called The Merchants Association to promote trade in the area and help support development. The organization also built the first school in El Cajon and organized a fire department. In 1886, a group of businessmen bought out Altamirano's stake in El Cajon and renamed it Dutch Point Park after their company's headquarters in Rotterdam Netherlands; this change helped make Dutch Point Park one of Northern California's most important economic centers during its early years. After World War II ended, English speakers moved into Dutch Point Park while Latinos continued to live within town limits until the late 1990s when they were finally granted full residency status in El Cajon El cajorita
