El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 46,621 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Diego County after City of Industry and has been the fastest-growing city in California for over 20 years. El Cajon is located on a long peninsula that forms part of the eastern coast of San Diego Bay, bordered by Imperial Valley to the south and east and La Jolla to the north. The name "Cajon" derives from Spanish words meaning "Island of Many Waters". The town first settled by Europeans in 1847 as Rancho El Cajon Mexican Land grant No. 6 from Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla, who also served as governor of Alta California during this time period. The grant extended from present-day Encinitas down to what are now downtown Escondido and parts of Mission Beach. In 1881, George Hearst founded publishing company Hearst papers in San Diego; he named it Hearst newspapers after himself and his brother William Randolph Hearst. In 1920, Ralph Waldo Emerson's granddaughter passed through El Cajon on her way to visit him at Occidental College where she was studying English literature; she picked up souvenirs including an old copy of Leaves of Grass which later found its way into the hands of then-president Richard Nixon while he was attending college (Nixon would later apologize for purchasing it). A year later, businessman Lewis Hill bought part of the rancho from Anza y Costilla for $10 per acre ($160 per kilometer). He built a small fortification called Fort Myer near present-day Highway National 94 just outside El Cajon to protect his land against squatters and other claimants along the southern coast who were hoping to take advantage of new land grants available in central California during these early days after Mexico's independence from Spain. In 1924 Hill sold all his interests in Hearst papers except for portions used for publication within El Cajon limits - these were published under new ownership as Journal Press Company - becoming one of only two people everto own editorial control over entire metropolitanSanDiegoPressarea(the other being Don Scripps whose company controlled local television stations). He died December 5th 1951 aged 90 years old at home in Santa Ana along with wife Edith Egan (née Weiser) who had preceded him as publisher/owner/editorial director at Journal Press Company

El Cajon is a small town in San Diego County, California. It was founded in 1884 by Mexican Americans and Italian Americans, who arrived as part of the wave of immigration that swept across southern California during the late 19th century. The town's name comes from two Spanish words: caja (package) and alcanzar (to achieve). The first El Cajon post office opened in 1885. The town is located on the edge of what is now downtown San Diego, on both sides of Military Road. At one time it boasted a population of around 10,000 people. Today its population is only about 3,500 people. The history of El Cajon goes back to 1884 when Mexican American José Andres Morales and Italian American Angelo Guglielmi settled in the area after moving from Torrance County, California. They named their new community "Caja" for their package store - which they had built on land they purchased from José Palomo Soriano. At first most residents were transient workers employed by local businesses or ranch hands; but over time these businesses grew more permanent and began to hire locals as well. In 1907-08 the first African American resident came to El Cajon when Harry Blackwell arrived from Georgia with his family for work on a nearby military base (theodore Roosevelt had just been elected president). From then until World War II there was no black resident of El Cajon other than transient workers or soldiers serving here at Fort Ord or elsewhere in Southern California; however, this changed dramatically during World War II when an influx of Japanese Americans living in Waukegan led to open discrimination against all Japanese citizens throughout much of southern California following Pearl Harbor. A number of companies including Wells Fargo & Co., Boeing Airplanes Inc., Imperial Tobacco Company and General Electric Corporation set up shop here during World War II; many found temporary solutions to wartime shortages through subcontracting arrangements with local companies rather than investing directly in war production plants due to fear that such investments might be disrupted if hostilities ended prematurely. Consequently, many jobs never got filled because wartime production restrictions caused some firms to choose not to build new plants while others chose instead not To compete with German industry that could easily have replaced any lost production at home should hostilities end prematurely
The town of El Cajon, California was founded in 1847 by Captain John T. Goodwin and his wife Eliza A. Goodwin on the shore of San Diego Bay. The Goodwins named their small town after themselves, although it is now known as simply "El Cajon". The population of El Cajon grew rapidly during its early years, and by 1853 it had a store, hotel, post office, and school. In 1865 the first railway reached the town from Carlsbad through San Diego County via the Central Pacific Railroad. By 1870 there were three stores and about 100 people living in El Cajon. The Panic of 1893 caused a sharp decline in business activity in El Cajon; however, it remained an important agricultural center until about 1915 when oil production began to increase at nearby Encinitas. As oil production increased, more people came to live in El Cajon and over time the community became more diverse with a greater number of Latino residents as well as Asian and American Indians. However, despite this diversity growth has been slow due to competing pressures from other towns in the area such as Vista del Loma and Oceanside which have experienced much faster growth rates since World War II stopped most natural economic development except for agriculture within a radius around those two towns. In recent years there has been some redevelopment taking place near downtown along First Street which may lead to new businesses or housing developments near that intersection if approved by city officials
