El Cajon, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 67,291 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Ocean and lies at an elevation of 965 feet (304 m). The town was platted in 1853 by prospectors looking for gold mining sites in the new Trans-Alaska Railway route to Valdez. The first post office was established in 1854. The name El Cajon comes from Spanish "californio" meaning "the country over there". In 1857, James K. Polk visited El Cajon and recommended it for incorporation as a village because of its strategic location on the old Don Pedro Road between San Diego and Carquinez Sounds National Seashore; this road later became known as US 101. By 1860, El Cajon had a school and two churches. A store opened in 1865 which was soon followed by another store, hotel and several other businesses before annexing portions of neighboring towns such as North Park and Vista del Mar around 1870-1871. During World War II, El Cajon served as a major seaport for goods moving through the Panama Canal into Allied countries during Operation Husky. In recent years, many high-tech companies have moved their operations to El Cajon including Pixar Animation Studios (Pixar), Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., Twitter LLC (TWTR)and Salesforce CRM software company Salesforce Ltd.. Today's economy is based largely on aerospace manufacturers Boeing Co.'s United Aircraft Industries division and defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corporation's Missiles & Fire Control division; both companies are headquartered here also development centers are located at nearby Imperial Beach less than one mile away from downtown El Cajon proper while others smaller businesses operate out of satellite offices or remote home offices across various parts of Southern California such as Orange County or Inland Empire counties

El Cajon was founded in 1887 by George W. Elmore and his brother, John P. Elmore. They came from a family of farmers who had been living in the area for many years. The brothers developed a small dry goods store near the junction of State Route 66 and Pacific Highway 1, which they called the Eldridge Store. In 1890, they moved their business to what is now known as 701 N Main Street. In 1903, they became the first company to install a electric plant in El Cajon when they bought an old sawmill on SMain Street from JACOBSON & CO. In 1912, Mr. Elmore sold his interest in the business to his son-in-law, Harry Hines, who continued to run it until he died in 1945. During World War II, Mr. Hines managed production at the plant for United States Military Government (USMGC) munitions manufacturers and also served as vice president of local Chamber of Commerce affairs during that time period In 1951, Mr. Hines' widow sold her share in the business to her son-in-law Donald Aird; Donald ran it until its sale to The Expressway Corporation in 1978 which changed its name to First Interstate Bancorporation plc., later renamed Bank of America Corporation BankOfAmerica corporation was merged with Merrill Lynch International Incorporated on September 15th 1998 under ticker symbol "BAC" First Interstate Bancorporation plc., later renamed Bank Of America Corporation vacated all its offices located within City Limits of El Cajon including 701 N Main Street whereupon facility became available for use by otherEntityes including The Expressway Corporation which changed its name backtoElCajonCity limits bank The property has since been leased back out again by City Limits Bank and currently houses multiple businesses such as Home Loans Plus Incorporated (HLP), First American Property Management Company (FAPMC) and Bob's Discount Tire .
El Cajon is located on the San Diego side of the county, about 11 miles south of downtown San Diego. The first humans to live in what is now El Cajon Manor date back to 1853 when Captain John Wesley Powell and his exploring party discovered shale oil reserves in what is now Imperial County. construction of a rail line from San Diego to Baja California began in 1875, and by 1895, all the way up to Yuma was served by El Cajon Railway. On July 15, 1915 local business man Raymond J. Laughlin donated land at Convoy Avenue and Harbor Drive for a Naval airbase known as Pacific Coast Air Force Station (later Goodyear AFB). On October 1, 1945 the United States Navy assigned El Cajon its own naval aviation squadron which became known as " HMCS El Cajon". It played an important role during World War II providing daily escort services for American submarines hunting German submarines off California's coast. In 1951 it became part of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar before finally becoming a Naval Aviation base on October 1, 1955 with P-3C Neptune aircraft stationed there until 1986 when they were replaced by F/A-18 Hornets. The military closure of Goodyear AFB led to an increase in commercial activity at El Cajon as businesses moved into former Naval airfield buildings vacated by the Marines. The result was a major revitalization project that transformed what had been one of Southern California's most established suburbs into a vibrant community center with restaurants and nightlife districts dating back to the 1960s. Today, El Cajon continues its role as an important resort town with visitor attractions such as Seaworld Discovery Center and Marina del Rey Bowl Stadium hosting major league baseball games each year; however, due to its proximity to downtownSanDiegoand other major city amenities it has also become increasingly popular among retirees seeking easy access to shopping and dining opportunities while maintaining close ties with their home town
