In 1821 Mexican independence was proclaimed from Spain; this led to an era of colonial rule where many aspects of life were shaped by Spanish authorities. After Mexicanindependence was granted by U.S. President James K. Polk in 1846, American settlers began arriving as part of General Antonio López de Santa Anna's attempt to overrun California with American forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). A rancho called Rancho San José was established near present day downtown El Cajon in 1849 by John Sutter and his brother Jedediah Sutter II. From here settler Jens Hansen started farming wheat on his farm southeast of town in 1855 while Hans Christian Andersen set up shop as a bootblack for local entrepreneur Elishauser Beall on Beall's land northeast of town between 1860-1861 (now known as Hansen Park). In 1870s two more families - David Starr Jordan and his wife Emma Lazarus - moved into what is now downtown El Cajon from their home outside Los Angeles also known as "the Hills." By 1880 there were over 100 people living in El Cajon Village; most worked within a few miles of their homes although some ventured out into adjacent communities such as La Mesa or Carlsbad for work opportunities or trade goods that they brought back with them when they left for new places. During Prohibition (1912- 1933) much alcohol production took place within close proximity to large manufacturing plants including breweries like Adolphus Busch Brewery which operated along Third Street between Broadway Boulevard/Enderman Road and Ivar Hagstrom Boulevard/Paddock Drive until it closed its doors permanently due to government regulations placed upon it by then president Woodrow Wilson following passage of The Volstead Act (1921). In 1923 Winton White opened Pabst Brewing Company on Fifth Street just east of Interstate 805 just north of Veterans Memorial Coliseum; this led directly to organized crime activity that characterized much of southern San Diego County during Prohibition years because organized crime groups could bribe law enforcement officials not only through donations but also through loans sharking businesses which originated criminal debts owed by customers saint gove prohibition
