In 1875, developers John Poma and James Wickersham bought 4,500 acres (16 km2) of land east of present-day El Cajon from Alvarado for $1 million dollars plus interest. The two men started building a golf course on the site which they christened Pacific Links Golf Course after themselves and later changed it to Los Padres National Golf Course. The first professional tournament ever held in Southern California took place at Pacific Links in 1922; it was won by Roy Hadley Jr., then captain of the USVETS team playing against England’s Royal Navy at Long Beach Pier Tennis Club in downtown Los Angeles

In 1853, Quaker entrepreneur Amos Kendall bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land northeast of present-day downtown El Cajon for $10 per year in return for keeping watch over horses grazing there; Kendall developed what is now Old Town into a commercial center with stores, warehouses, and a schoolhouse he built on what is today First Avenue North between Seventh Street and Eighth Street N., west of Interstate 5 Altadena Boulevard (now I-5 Business Loop), east of Interstate 8 Mountain View Boulevard (now I-805), south of State Route 128 Encinitas Boulevard (now SR 128 Encinitas Blvd.), north of US 101 Imperial Beach Boulevard (then US 101 Alternate), and east of Mission Bay Naval Air Station land serving as barracks for shipbuilding sailors during World War II—the only U .S . naval air station operated by naval soldiers during World War II outside metropolitan Los Angeles or New York City.—later renamed Marine Corps Base San Diego—eliminating most need for military housing within city limits.—By 1962 all but two blocks inside downtown had been vacated for new development; this area now forms much of the eastern edge of Downtown El Cajon
The first Europeans to see the area now known as El Cajon were Spanish explorers in 1542. In 1821, General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded a Mexican settlement at San Diego and named it after himself, Santiago de los Caballeros del Cajon. The Post Office at El Cajon was established on July 3, 1824.
