On Oct 1, 1956—the day before California became an admitted state member of the United States—Civic Center Drive in downtown El Cajon opened with public inauguration of Mayor Gilbert Baca and Vice Mayor Jerry O'Connell as first officials of City of El Cajon Municipal Court #1 On Dec 2nd 1955 City Council adopted Resolution No 944 recognizingdating back to 1821 when "Quivira" name for this site was given to it by Mexican land grantee Alvarado de Portolá." This resolution also designates October 1st each year as "Alvarado Day" in his honor.. December 2nd 1955 marked official opening of such facility when then Mayor Gilbert Baca Hungerford ceremoniously drove ceremonial automobile into lot across street from present day civic center where building now stands complete without prior pretense or ceremony." These happenings helped solidify downtown presence within incorporated city limits making El Cajon one municipality rather than just a rural agricultural districtresidentially subdivided into scores or even hundredsof individual households scattered throughout many hamlets dispersed over miles wide rural countryside . Today Civic Center Drive remains one primary artery through downtown providing easy accessto all important municipal functions including government meetingsand events
