They named their town after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who had led Mexico's victory over Ulysses S Grant's American army at Palo Alto on November 6, 1847. Santa Anna was later assassinated by Mexican revolutionaries in1867. The town grew slowly until World War II when millions of people moved into Southern California because of the war effort. With rapid growth came problems such as Traffic congestion and limited land availability due to forest fires that burned throughout much ofSouthern California during 1944-1945 (the so-called "Great Fire"). 2 million people lived within walking distance of El Cajon by 1950; however only 1 million remained by 2000%. Many businesses closed during this time because there wasn't enough housing or jobs available nearby to support increased traffic levels and job loss caused by new development outside of town limits. The last major redevelopment project occurred during the 1960s when some parts of downtown were destroyed to make way for shopping malls."
