El Cajon is one of the most diverse cities in Orange County. The city has a rich history that goes back to 1853. At that time, El Cajon was part of Rancho San Diego, which was owned by José Herrera y Costilla. Herrera and Costilla were both from Spain and they together organized a town in southern California called Villa Hermosa. In 1856, the town was transferred to what is now El Cajon and it became an independent municipality. The first firearms in El Cajon were revolvers made by Fortunato Nunez in 1857. However, it wasn't until 1862 that ammunition began to be available here. That year, Captain John Burt opened a store in downtown El Cajon which soon became known as the Arsenal of El Cajon because he sold arms and ammunition here at his store. The Arsenal continued to operate until 1865 when it closed due to lack of business. In 1875, George Wickersham opened a store on Main Street which became known as the Wickersham Arms Store after him. This store continued to operate until 1915 when it closed due to financial problems. In 1911, Carlos Mendoza opened a hardware store on Seventh Avenue which also became known as the Mendoza Hardware Store because its founder had done business here before. The store continued operations until 1982 when it closed due to health reasons (Mendoza passed away in 1979). In 1938, Don Rojasopened his own grocery chain called Don Rojas's Supermarket located near Old Town Hall on Third Street in El Cajon. The Grocery chain continued operation until 1984 when it went out of business due to economic troubles (Rojas died in 1985). In 1959, Manuel Ramos reopened his old grocery store on Fourth Avenue which became know as the Ramos Grocery Store because its founder had done business here before (Ramos passed away in 1980). In 1978, Edwin Poe set up shop inside what is now Red Lobster restaurant on First Avenue North in El Cajon with the goal of starting an electronic sales outfit called Edsons Electronics Incorporated (Eedsons would later become defunct). Poe started trading stocks at his shop before expanding into selling items such as computer parts and accessories online beginning around 1990 (Poe passed away in 2000). In 1994-1995 Ignacio Ramirez reopened his old clothing boutique called Lululemon Athletica located at 5408 Canter Road eastside Del Rey Beach CA 92613 after years of closure . Lululemon would continue operating for another 15 years prior to closing its doors for good on September 10th 2017 citing "unforeseen legal challenges"

That year saw the opening of what would become one of El Cajon's largest shopping malls – First American Plaza – which attracted droves of shoppers from nearby cities including San Diego and Imperial Beach. After several years of steady growth over which local businesses added new names such as Sears & Roebuck (later Kmart) and JCPenney (later Walmart), First American Plaza went bankrupt in 1988 following heavy competition from larger mall chains across Southern California combined with economic recession throughout most Western US at this time period

During World War II, El Cajon played an important role as a strategic airbase for American forces during the Pacific Theater. In 1945 it also served as home to Naval Air Station Miramar until its closure in 1991.
