El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 61,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger San Diego metropolitan area. The first European contact with what is now El Cajon occurred in 1695 when Francisco García de la Vega explored the region as part of his military expedition against Mexico City. On July 26, 1769, Juan Bautista de Anza set out from La Jolla on his way to found Monterey Bay Colony; he named nearby Point Conception after Commodore Juan Manuel De Salinas's flagship during this era of Spanish colonial rule in California. The first white person to live in what is now El Cajon was James Irvine who arrived in 1814 by ship from Portsmouth, England on Board HMS "Dorsetshire". He founded Irvine Ranch which included present-day Irvine Beach and used it as a grazing ground for cattle until 1849 when he sold it to José Murillo y Arroyo for $2,500 (). In 1853 an act was passed by the US Congress which designated Point Conception as a lighthouse station () and within three years that had been replaced by one built on an earlier site just south of today's beach near where Second Street meets First Street (now called Pacific Coast Highway). A second lighthouse station () was also established at Fourth Street east of today's beach between Third Avenue and Fourth Street (now Pioneer Boulevard). Although no records remain to show how many stations were established thereabouts, both posts continued service until 1898. In 1840 Mexican Independence War General Antonio Lopez led 1st Battalion under Captain Fernando Ortiz towards Corrales Heights southeast of town during routine reconnaissance patrol; upon arrival they encountered American forces commanded by Colonel John Kearny with Siege Artillery under Lieutenant George Armstrong (); before long Lopez had joined General Antonio Guerrero's force operating against Kearny northeast of town; following their victory over Kearny's army some 4000 Mexican soldiers surrendered unconditionally at Pueblo del Rey about two miles due west of present-day North Park Drive (). Thereafter only unarmed civilians remaining in town took up arms against American forces culminating with Battle of Cerrito Creek BridgeMay 10–121846 (), won by US Army over 6 days without loss despite overwhelming numbers (); effectively ending Anglo domination over southern Californians (). After Mexican independence all land east of Pueblodel Rey became ranchland while Santa Fe Trail passing through town left little access for development outside town save for small amounts along modern day Old Post Road leading out into Mission Valley A post office opened at Point Conception April 5th 1847 (). The citizens voted on May 12th 1850 to name their city El Cajon after Commodore John Denny who served aboard USS Constitution during war efforts 1861-1865 off coastof Mexico City.; Denny chose "Condo" because it sounded like "township" but no record exists that he actually visited or lived here prior to choosing this name.– hence current spelling: El Cajon

After World War II ended, growth slowed due to the Japanese invasion of Japan and subsequent military occupation; however, it resumed during the Korean War when companies moved back into town from overseas manufacturing locations. After that time growth continued thanks to strong economic development including suburban housing developments (see "El Cajon's Demographics" below). In recent years there have been mixed signals about whether or not El Cajon will continue to experience rapid growth or if conditions have changed so much that it is no longer viable for businesses to establish themselves here; yet despite these doubts many people remain optimistic about future prospects for this vibrant community. One of El Cajón's most popular tourist attractions is its beaches which include Torrey Pines National Park beach which has sandy shores backed by tall cliffs perfect for swimming; North Beach which features wide white sand beaches backed by rocky headlands ideal for sunbathing; Asuncion beach which has long crystal clear waters ideal for swimming; while inland Oceanside offers hiking trails, restaurants/bars/nightlife options as well as some of San Diego County’s tallest peaks including Mount Wilson (1325 feet)and Point Loma (1619 feet).
