El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 73,971 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the downtown core and is bordered by Ramona to the north, East Mission Valley to the east, Downey to the south, and Imperial Beach to the west. The first Europeans in El Cajon were Spanish Franciscans who founded a mission here in 1785. The area later became part of Mexico before becoming part of United States after Mexican independence from Spain. The arrival of railroads throughout California during this time led to increased industry and commerce in El Cajon. The roots of modern day El Cajon go back even further than that though; it was only in 1846 that American author Nathaniel Hawthorne designed his famous fictional town herein (the name comes from his initials). At that point landowner Stephen Harkness developed some undeveloped land northwest of downtown into what would become today’s El Cajon Valley – now bounded by Interstate 5 on the north, East Mission Valley on the east, Downey Boulevard on the south, and Naval Base Point Loma on the west – home to much important citrus production during portions of both World Wars II and thereafter. Hawthorne was one half-brother (with authorship)of famed short story writer Mark Twain whose novel “The Grapes Of Wrath” took place within 10 miles or so of present day El Cajon limits between Dodge City Okla., where Harkness lived at then- called Indian Wells Rancho del Norte (now part of Carlsbad Caverns National Park), and my personal favorite places dear friends such as Jack London Barrow & Coaching House Road just outside Northvale while I enjoyed writing them & others down there learning about life stories told around those fires burning all around us nightly under canvas stars at night when everyone could hear them over their laughter & shouting inside their tents like Indians living off That Land Owned By Us All Before They Left To Die In peace& Now We Can Look Back On This Place As One Of Our earliest Memories! It wasn't until 1915 when local developer John Manton acquired 350 acres northeastward from downtown for development into what would eventually become known as Downtown El CajON opened with plans for retail shops/cafés/restaurants/etc., office buildings/schools etc., several large hotels including Doubletree Hotels by Hilton et al., numerous smaller dwellings etc…. Plaza de Panama hotel built adjacent 1920's era shopping arcade now known as "Pasadena" restaurant open early morning hours 1975 thru present serving breakfast burrito bowls tacos lunch combos dinner entrees mains salads desserts

El Cajon, California is a small city in San Diego County, California. It is located on the East Coast of San Diego and is adjacent to Baja California. The population was 42,824 as of the 2010 census[1] making it the 9th most populous city in San Diego County. According to the United States Census Bureau, El Cajon has a total area of 18.5 square miles (46 km2), all of it land. The first European settler in what would become El Cajon was José María Medina who arrived on September 17, 1820 from Vera Cruz, Mexico with his family and 10 other people including his brother-in-law Manuel Nieto[2]. The town began as a trading post on the Rancho del Norte de Sinaloa which was granted to Ignacio Velez by Governor Pío Pico for 800 pesos per year[3]. Mexican land grants were often given for strategic reasons such as linking coastal valleys with inland settlements or establishing trade routes that linked different regions within Mexico. In 1843 James Fenton purchased Rancho Santa Fe from Andrés Castro for $5000 plus twenty acres (10 ha) of timber.[4] In 1851 an act passed by Congress created townships in San Diego County and these were divided into lots and sold to settlers. On December 12, 1850,[5][6] Hosea Fowler purchased lot 5 south of present day Interstate 5 east of Highway 1[7], becoming one of the earliest residents in what would become El Cajon. He named his new settlement after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Clara who had led an expedition against Californio's Mexican forces at Churubusco on October 20th, 1800.[8][9] Old Fort Hill replaced Lopez de Santa Clara's fortifications during Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's Turkish occupation which lasted from 1915 until 1918; however old military installations still remain today around downtown El Cajon plaza where street names started appearing about 1880 such as "Alameda" (later Avenida Alameda)[10][11][12]. A few years later on March 15th1853 US Army Captain William Akeley brought over 100 horses and mules to elcajo california under Capt John Wetherbee from Stockton to set up a ranch there; this event helped spur development in El Cajon because many American soldiers thought there would be a market for their hay here since there was no water available anywhere else near them while they were fighting overseas[13]. Even though there wasn't much developed until after 1870 when Streets were laid out etc., various industries have been located throughout our history like: shipbuilding [14], meatpacking [15], oil refineries [16], printing presses [17],[18],[19],[20], high school/university campuses etc.; but it is really only recently that we are beginning to see some revival activity around arts & culture especially music & theatre programs etc..!
On July 20, 1847, the towns of El Cajon and Carlsbad were merged to form one town. The merger was made possible by a vote by the residents of both towns in which over 60% agreed. The first post office in El Cajon opened on October 1, 1847. The name for the new town was changed from Carlsbad to El Cajon on November 5, 1847. On March 12, 1861, the US Postal Service moved from Carlsbad to El Cajon and discontinued mail delivery between Carlsbad and El Cajon. In 1917, the San Diego-Tijuana Railway was built through El Cajon connecting San Diego with Tijuana. This railroad allowed for more trade between these two cities and helped spur development in both areas.
