In 1887, George Morrison established what would become East Palo Alto as a small farming town on land that he had purchased from José Castro de la Peña y Ulloa. Morrison named his new town after his mentor and friend, George Willard Stevens (1796-1868). Stevens was an American Scientist who played an important role in developing digital technologies during the late 1800s. In 1902, Morrison donated additional land to make up what became east side of Central Avenue which led to today’s downtown area. During World War II, much of the infrastructure needed for military activity was built near east side of Central Avenue including: airfields; hospitals; radar stations; and ammunition storage yards. Today many remnants from these wartime efforts can still be found around east side of Central Avenue such as: Air Force Base Road (formerly US 101), Naval Station East Point Road (formerly US 1), Morrill Park Elementary School, and Morrill Park Middle School. The city began planning for growth after World War II when it realized that its share of Northern California’s growing population would require more space than it could currently provide through just detached single family homes orchards alone. In 1951, Mayor John Kapp assigned City Manager Harry Duchinetti to develop plans for annexing adjacent rural properties northward along Interstate 280 so that eastern section of town could house automobiles parked on their property lines instead of driving into Fremont or Stanford University areas where parking rates were high or too difficult to find at night time. This plan eventually became reality when I-280 was widened and connected directly to El Camino Real which made access possible for cars across town without having to drive down State Street or Telegraph Ave., thus saving drivers valuable time during morning hours El Camino Real Boulevard becoming known today as “City Boulevard” due its proximity to downtown East Palo Alto overall traffic congestion has decreased dramatically since then making this corridor one of proudest featuresofEastPaloAlto
East Palo Alto was founded on October 20, 1887 by George H. Wigglesworth and his wife Martha. The town was named after the East Palo Alto reservation in San Francisco where Wigglesworth had been living for a few years.
