East Palo Alto is a city located in San Mateo County, California. The population was 54,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the East Palo Alto–Alameda–San Francisco metropolitan area. The history of East Palo Alto can be traced back to 1874 when two men by the name of Merrill and Lathrop started a small farm on Redwood Street in what is now downtown East Palo Alto. In 1915, a group of businessmen led by banker George W. Perkins bought out Merrill and purchased the farm outright for $9,000 USD. They named their new business "East Palo Alto Corporation" and began developing it into an agricultural center with processing plants, warehouses, a retail district and housing developments. In 1974, East Palo Alto became incorporated as a city under the jurisdiction of San Mateo County after being passed through with Proposition 13 on November 3rd ballot campaign promises from then- Mayor Chuck Reed (D). The incorporation has played an important role in both its economy and municipal government since then; as well as providing opportunities for professional growth within city hall departments such as public works, police services and marketing/commercial operations. The city began as part of the Rancho Tejon grant given to Juan Bautista Almaden by Mexican governor Antonio López de Santa Anna on November 16, 1821. The grant extended from what is now Hayward to Palo Alto and El Sobrante. In 1828, East Palo Alto became an independent town under the leadership of Isaiah Westcott. In 1854, East Palo Alto annexed much of neighboring Hill Valley excluding present-day Lawrenceville and parts of Menlo Park. In 1861, East Palo Alto became a city when it annexed Lawrenceville and parts of Menlo Park and incorporated as a city under the name "East Palo Alto." In 1898, during World War I, Japanese American pilots stationed at Stanford Air Base were interned in East Palo Alto without trial or chargeable detention. They were later released but their families remain Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). On January 3rd 2018 Mayor Ed Lee announced that he would not seek re-election after being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and less than two years remaining in his term
