East Palo Alto is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 24,817 at the 2010 census. It is located on the East Palo Alto Peninsula between San Francisco and Palo Alto. The first European settlers in East Palo Alto were Portuguese traders who established a small trading post in 1788 on what is now Rancho del Rey. In 1868, Russian–born millionaire and philanthropist Nicholas Zakheim donated land to establish East Palo Alto High School. The school was renamed for him in 1969 after he died. In 1892, J.P. Morgan bought 5,000 acres of land east of downtown from Elias Comstock and founded Morgan Stanley & Company with $10 million of his own money. Morgan's son John Drexel became president of the company in 1903 and developed it into one of Silicon Valley's most successful banks by organizing its products into individual stocks that could be traded on Wall Street. In 1914 Drexel sold Morgan Stanley to brothers Jay and Charles Schwab for $30 million (the largest single investment ever made at the time). The Schwabs served as managers until their death in 1998 when they were succeeded by their son Jamie Schwab. During World War II, American soldiers stationed at Stanford Medical Center built a air-raid shelter known as "The Hole" that became an important part of campus life during the war years because it offered protection from bombs dropped by Japan over North America during the war; it closed down after the end of hostilities but was later reopened as a research facility by Caltech under George Kalmanovich in 1964-1968 before being mothballed again until 1994 when it reopened as part of Stanford University's Sackler Hall complex housing many different departments including Earth Sciences and Chemistry buildings are currently home to several large telescopes.) In 1951 IBM Corporation moved its corporate headquarters from New York City to Menlo Park after buying 60 acres (24 ha) near Highway 101 and El Camino Real Boulevard (now Interstate 880).
