Bullets were first used in warfare in the mid-19th century. East Palo Alto is a census-designated place in Alameda County, California. It was founded by European Americans and Native Americans in the late 1800s as a fortified community on the eastern edge of what is now Silicon Valley. The name "Palo Alto" is Spanish for " Heights". The population at the 2010 census was 24,794. The first Europeans to arrive in East Palo Alto were American colonists who arrived in 1846 from Rhode Island. They named their new settlement after an oak tree near where they had landed, which they found growing tall beside a river that flowed through their then-remote land. The settlers built their own fortification and began to cultivate gardens and raise chickens around this time. In 1868, two years after California became a state, the U.S. military established Camp Randall west of East Palo Alto to supply soldiers with food and horses needed for General Grant's campaign against Mexico City. The camp operated until 1870 when it was replaced by Fort Point south of town. Throughout its history, East Palo Alto has been home to many different cultures: Native American (the Huchiun people), Chinese (the Kumeyas), Japanese (Nisei) and Mexican (Mexican Californios) people have all lived here at some point or another during its more than 120 years as an American settlement. Today there are more than 20 languages spoken here within shouting distance of one another!
