In 1852, rancho owner Manuel Nieto sold what was then called Rancho Rinconada to Juan Bautista Alvarado for $10 per acre ($2 per square foot). This led to increased settlement around what are now Los Altos Hills and Menlo Park due to new transportation opportunities opened up by railroad development in East Palo Alto during the late 19th century: railroads extended from Berkeley down into Silicon Valley
The first permanent European settlement in East Palo Alto was made by Spanish farmers in 1769. They called the area San Pedro de Atacama, after the Indies of South America. The original mission church and school were built here, but they were destroyed in a fire in 1848. A new mission and school was built in 1851, and it is still functional today. In 1892, East Palo Alto became an incorporated town. It had a population of about 100 people.
