Dublin is one of the few remaining settlements in Kern County that were founded before the birth of Kern County as a organized county on October 15, 1849. The first recorded reference to gun grips in Dublin comes from an article written by Captain John Waddell and published in "The American Rifleman" magazine on December 13th, 1865. According to this article, Captain Waddell observed that some men who had just come from a cattle drive used their guns with such care that "No marks could be made upon them". This observation led Captain Waddell to believe that gun grips were not only important for holding a firearm but also for protecting oneself during fights or barfights. Dublin was founded in 1867 by Irish immigrants who were fleeing religious and political persecution in their homeland. The name "Dublin" comes from the Irish word "duobh," meaning "calm." The original settlers were agriculturists and their descendants continue to farmlands that encompass most of the city today. Dublin has been home to many businesses including two banks and several restaurants and bars. The first post office opened in 1868 and served as the focal point for trade between Dubliners and people living nearby, such as Elko County. In 1919, when World War I ended, Ireland declared its neutrality but still took part in hostilities as an ally of Great Britain. This caused friction with other American cities that had become involved in the war effort such as San Francisco which saw military activity throughout 1918 and 1919 on its periphery while Dublin remained largely unaffected; however this did not last long as relations improved after America's entry into World War II on April 12th 1941 due to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's assurance that Ireland would not be conquered by Nazi Germany like much of Europe had been (although some areas such as Cork City did succumb). After years of growth rates stalled during recessionary times starting around 2007-2009 due primarily to factors such as high housing prices without corresponding job growth or development options available outside those prices - Mayor Donohue announced plans for what became known as "the revitalization plan".
